STORM WIPED OUT…The Sioux Falls Storm have released all but two players from their championship team.
Team officials think the rest of the Indoor Football League wants to end their championship run, or force them out of the league.
The Sioux Falls Argus-Leader reports it’s believed some teams have threatened not to recommit if the Storm return with the same roster of players. This move could be a pre-emptive strike against teams that have animosity toward the league champions.
Owner Ted Tryon says he’s not sure what’s going to happen to the league, what teams are going to come back, or what his team is going to do, so in fairness to the players, he’s giving them control of their careers.
Running back Korey Williams and defensive back Dan O’Keefe have contracts. If the Storm decide to remain with the IFL, Tryon says the team can re-sign whatever players they want to retain. Releases make it possible for other teams to negotiate with them.
HANSON TO OMAHA…Pierre prep star Zach Hanson has committed to continue his basketball career at the Creighton University at the conclusion of his high school career.
Hanson, one of South Dakota’s most coveted recruits, will bring his 6-foot-9 frame to Omaha to join the Bluejays in the Missouri Valley Conference.
Hanson was sought by schools such as Nebraska and Gonzaga but the skilled big man decided Creighton was the top fit.
Many Division I heavyweights were pursuing South Dakota’s most talented pivot but the pitch from Creighton coach Greg McDermott enticed Hanson to become a Bluejay.
SDSU SOCCER INVITE…South Dakota State women's soccer sophomore Stephanie Krzywania secured an invitation to attend mini-camp with the under-19 (U19) Poland National soccer team. The camp runs August second through the fifth in Warsaw.
If Krzywania makes the team, she secures an invitation to take part in the U19 World Cup qualifying matches to take place in Hungary in October.
Krzywania, whose hometown is listed as Markham, Ontario, Canada, has dual citizenship as both of her parents are Polish and emigrated to Canada.
Krzywania played in 10 games for the Jacks last season with three shot attempts, two on goal.
SMART JACKS…The South Dakota State University women's basketball team continued its track record of academic success, ranking second among Division I programs in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's Academic Top 25 with a 3.610 team grade-point average during the recently completed 2011-12 academic year.
Wisconsin-Green Bay held the top spot among Division I programs, edging the Jackrabbits for the top spot with a 3.616 team GPA. The top three teams in the D-I rankings all played in the NCAA Tournament as DePaul (Ill.) completed the trio with a 3.604 GPA.
Across all divisions of women's college basketball, which includes NCAA Division II, Division III, NAIA and junior colleges, the Jackrabbits finished 10th overall. Drury (Mo.) led all divisions with a 3.709 team GPA, followed by Northland (Wis.) at 3.706.
