BANDITS…The Brookings Bandits ran their record to 33-6 with a doubleheader sweep of Marshall.
Brookings cut loose for a seven-run second inning en route to a 14-4 win in the nightcap. Landon Busch had three hits, including two doubles, and five RBI – Matt Thomas added three hits. Skyler Kary, Kelby Beste and Trevor Puetz had two hits apiece. Matt Pejsa threw two and two-thirds innings of two-hit relief for the win.
The Bandits built a 5-2 lead in the opener, and won 6-3. Konner Beste had two hits, including a double, and two RBI to lead the Brookings offense. Corey Roach allowed seven hits, three earned runs, walked one and struck out three in the complete game win.
AMATEUR RANKINGS… Brandon Valley and the Dell Rapids Mudcats are the top-rated teams in the final South Dakota amateur baseball poll of the 2012 season.
Class A — 1. Brandon Valley; 2. Renner Monarchs; 3. Yankton; 4. Sioux Falls Saints; 5. Pierre.
Class B — 1. Dell Rapids Mudcats; 2. Canova; 3. Redfield; 4. Crofton, Neb.; 5. Parkston Mudcats; 6. Harrisburg; 7. Salem; 8. Wynot, Neb.; 9. Madison; 10. (Tie) Dimock-Emery and Clark.
SDSU BASEBALL ALL-STARS… Three South Dakota State University baseball players have been named all-stars in their respective collegiate summer leagues in recent weeks.
Two Jackrabbit pitchers were selected to play in the July 11 Pacific West Baseball League All-Star Game. Adam Bray represented the Top Speed Baseball team, while Chad Hodges represented the Auburn (Calif.) Wildcats.
Bray posted a 5-1 record with a 1.34 earned run average in seven games. In 40 1/3 innings pitched, Bray has struck out 46 batters, walked 10 and surrendered only 28 hits. Hodges has appeared in eight games — four starts — and has recorded a 2-1 record to go along with two saves and a 2.49 ERA. He has fanned 23 hitters in 25 1/3 innings.
Joining Hodges on the all-star team was battery mate, catcher Reid Clary. Clary redshirted during the 2012 collegiate season after transferring from Illinois-Springfield. During the summer season, Clary is batting .323 with 11 runs batted in for Auburn.
ALL-STAR GAMES… The North squad overcame a rough start to outscore the South 20-0 in the second half on the way to a 27-15 football victory during the South Dakota High School All-Star Games Wednesday Night at Swisher Field in Aberdeen.
Milbank’s Nick Mears finished the night with 59 yards rushing and 99 yards passing – he also ran for a touchdown. Sioux Falls Lincoln’s Shultz finished the game with 151 yards passing and a touchdown. Mitchell’s Justin Greenway ran for a score.

The North All-Star volleyball team, which featured nine players who were in the 2011 state tournaments, clicked in the fifth set to post a 25-23, 18-25, 25-19, 14-25, 15-9 win over the South All-Stars.
The South was led by Haley Jorgensen with 13 kills and Dana Misiaszek with a dozen. Stephanie Heumiller handed out 25 set assists and Ivy Pearson of Alcester-Hudson totaled 24 digs.
The North leaders were Margaret McCloud and Jussy Tuscherer with six kills each, Mallory Fischer with 14 set assists and Tiffany Lundberg of Aberdeen Central with 13 digs.

The South won the boys’ basketball game 67-66 over the North. Shayne Gottlob of McCook Central led the South with 13 points, and Mitchell’s Jade Miller and Kyle Mathis each contributed a dozen.
Darin Peterka led a balanced attack for the North with 11 points and Skye Warwick followed with 10.
WRESTLING…The USA Junior Nationals, one of the three largest wrestling tournaments in the nation, is going on in Fargo, ND.
Winning the Junior Nationals in any event (Greco, Freestyle or Folkstyle) makes a wrestler a national nhampion - winning all three events makes a Triple Crown National Champion - a difficult and prestigious honor.
Eugene Martin of Kingsbury County went 6-2 and capturing fifth place. Greco Wrestling is all upper body wrestling and is scored in three individual periods. To win a Greco match you must win two-of-three periods or pick up a fall in any period. Mertin earned All American honors by placing in the top six. Eugene also won a SD HS State Championship back in February.
Sarara Mix, another Kingsbury County wrestler, had a good showing in the women’s freestyle division. Sarara went 3-2 and captured fourth place, making her an All American.
There are several other local wrestlers competing in the Folkstyle Division.
BHS FB ASST…The newest member of the Brookings High School varsity football coaching staff is on board.
Ken Vigdal’s been in the city for a couple of weeks. The USD alum coached state championship teams at Ogden, Iowa – and spent some time coaching at Sioux Center.
He says he’s spent time with new head coach Lee Schmidt working on offensive schemes. 97621 :19 “it’ll be fun”.
Vigdal says he’s familiar with 11AA football, watching the state finals on TV. He says people in Brookings don’t realize how highly the city’s regarded. 97622 :28 “go to Brookings”.
Vigdal will teach computer technology at Mickelson Middle School.
AMATEUR HOF…Former Lake Norden teammates Paul Raasch and Mick Hoglund will be inducted into the South Dakota Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame.
Raasch holds the state record for consecutive games played at 765. 97623 :38 “a little bit”.
Raasch says a heat-induced illness brought the string to a halt.
Hoglund trails only Kevin Leighton in career home runs – at 336. 97624 :26 “tell you that”.
Hoglund’s versatility was a trademark – playing center field, first base, shortstop and pitching in his career at Lake Norden and Dell Rapids.
Also entering the hall are Kent Alm of Aberdeen, John Westling of Yankton and Mike West of Philip. Induction ceremonies will be September 29th in Lake Norden.
SUMMIT CHAMPIONSHIPS… The Summit League announced dates and hosts for all 19 of its sport championships in 2012-13.
Headlining the schedule is The Summit League Basketball Championships, which will be held in Sioux Falls, S.D., for a record fifth consecutive year. The Sioux Falls Sports Authority will also host the 2014 championships at the Sioux Falls Arena, marking the first time that six tournaments in a row will be played at the same location.
Oakland is set to host a league-high three championships in 2012-13, beginning with cross country in October and men’s and women’s swimming & diving in February. The school will host the league’s first and last championships of the 2012-13 season, culminating with baseball in May. The 2013 Baseball Championship will mark the sport’s initial league tournament hosted by the Golden Grizzlies.
Fort Wayne, North Dakota State and South Dakota State will each host a pair of Summit League championships. IPFW will host both men’s and women’s tennis and men’s and women’s outdoor track & field within a three-week span. North Dakota State will serve as the site for volleyball for the third time in four years and softball for the second time in four seasons. South Dakota State will host women’s soccer for the third time in four years and also co-hosts the men’s and women’s golf championships with The Summit League.
The University of South Dakota hosts its first Summit League Championship when the Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track & Field Championships are contested at the DakotaDome, Feb. 24-25.
BIG SKY FB POLL…Big Sky media members pegged North Dakota to finish sixth, while the 13 Big Sky head coaches voted the new member to finish 10th.
The top five teams were the same in both polls with reigning co-champion Montana State leading the way. The Bobcats were followed by 2010 national champion Eastern Washington, the other 2011 co-champion Montana, Portland State and Cal Poly. The Mustangs, who shared the 2011 Great West title with UND, was the only new league member in the top five.
UND's sixth-standing in the media poll was just above Weber State, who was one of five teams receiving a first-place vote. Slots six through 10 in the coaches' poll were only separated by a total of 13 points. The gap between UND and Idaho State - the 11th-place team in the coaches' poll, was 38 points.
BIG 12 PRE-SEASON FB…West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith is the Big 12 preseason Offensive Player of the Year, beating out Oklahoma's Landry Jones.
The league released its preseason All-Big 12 teams, selected by media members who cover the conference.
Texas lineman Alex Okafor is the preseason Defensive Player of the Year and is one of three Longhorn defenders selected to the all-league team.
Oklahoma State's Joseph Randle and Texas's Malcolm Brown earned nods at running back, with Oklahoma's Kenny Stills picked at wide receiver.
Iowa State's linebacker duo of Jake Knott and A.J. Klein both made the cut along with Kansas State's Arthur Brown.
Freshman wide receiver Trey Metoyer of Oklahoma is the preseason Newcomer of the Year.
COMMUNITY AWARD…South Dakota State’s Bo Helm and John Niesen of Dakota State University football are among the 117 nominees for the 2012 Allstate American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Good Works Team, named by Allstate Insurance Company and AFCA. As one of college football's most prestigious off-the-field honors, the award recognizes a select group of college football players committed to making a difference in their communities.
Since 1992, the Good Works Team has shown a spotlight on the countless 'good works' and remarkable stories of service by student-athletes at all levels of college football competition. Award recipients represent the sport's finest in terms of character and leadership in the community.
