BANDITS SENIOR DAY…Today marks the final home game for seven Bandits players.  They'll be honored prior to game two of the doubleheader with Yankton.  Festivities for the night will take place starting no earlier than 5:00pm (remember it's a 3:00/5:00 doubleheader) so with that in mind, please make sure you're at the park by 5:00.
The community is encouraged to attend this event to send off seven young men in a way they deserve.

LITTLE LEAGUE…The Fargo All-Stars had won three games in North Dakota-South Dakota Little League sub-district pool play by a combined score of 32-6 and opened district with a 10-0 rout of the Rushmore All-Stars on Wednesday night.
But the Canyon Lake All-Stars weren’t fazed, breaking open a 5-3 game with a six-run fifth inning to down Fargo 11-3 at the sun-baked Harney Little League Complex on Thursday.
Rushmore resumed its giant-killing ways with a come-from-behind 7-6 in extra innings to eliminate Fargo late Thursday. Canyon Lake will face Rushmore today with the district title and a trip to the Midwest Regional Tournament in Indianapolis at stake.

HUBER HONORED…South Dakota women’s track and field coach Lucky Huber has been named the 2012 South Dakota Cross Country and Track and Field Coaches Association (SDCCTFCA) College Coach of the Year. The award was given out as part of the South Dakota High School Coaches Association Clinic Wednesday in Aberdeen.
Huber, who is entering his 19th season as the Coyote women’s track coach in 2012-13, received the honor after three Coyote women’s athletes earned All-American honors at the NCAA National Championships in June. Sophomore Bethany Buell and freshman Emily Grove were each first-team All-American in the pole vault, while junior Alexa Duling earned second-team All-American honors in the 400-meter hurdles. All three Coyotes competed at the U.S. Olympic Trials in June.

WARNER COMMIT…The first reported verbal commitment for the 2013 recruiting class at North Dakota State is from Warner.
Jarrod Tuszka picked NDSU over Minnesota-Duluth, although several other schools were in the mix. “I just loved how the community is behind them,” Tuszka told the Fargo Forum. “And it's three hours from home, so that's not so bad.”
The 6-foot-4, 215-pound all-around, all-state player is also a multi-sport standout for Warner, where he will be a senior this fall. A linebacker and running back who also is the team's kicker and punter, his projected position in college may be defensive end.

ABERDEEN COACHES…Two assistant coaches have moved into head coaching positions for the next school year at Aberdeen Central High School.
Kurt Drube will assume the reins of the Central boys' golf program. The Golden Eagles tied for seventh at last year's State AA Meet. Drube takes over from Brad Andera, who has accepted a non-teaching position in the private sector.
Trent Kurtz, a former Central boys' tennis player, will slide into the head coaching position for the Central boys' tennis team. Kurtz has served as an assistant to Dana Trumm for several seasons. Kurtz has also worked as a Central assistant coach. The Golden Eagles boys' tennis team finished sixth in the Eastern South Dakota Conference Meet last season and 10th at the State AA Meet.

NAHL SHOWCASE…Pairings have been announced for the 10th Annual NAHL Showcase, which will take place Sept. 12-16 at the Schwan Super Rink in Blaine, Minn. All 24 North American Hockey League teams will play four regular-season games.
The Aberdeen Wings' games are as follows: Sept. 12 vs. Wichita Falls Wildcats, 4:45 p.m.; Sept. 13, vs. Soo Eagles, 10 a.m.; Sept. 14, vs. Fresno Monsters, 5 p.m.; Sept. 15, vs. Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings, 4 p.m.
The tournament has evolved into one of hockey's most prestigious and well-attended events of the season.

BIG 12 POLL…Oklahoma has been picked to win the Big 12, followed by West Virginia and Texas.
A preseason poll of media members who cover the league was released Thursday. Oklahoma received 32 of a possible 41 first-place votes. The Mountaineers, who beat Clemson in the Orange Bowl last season, had seven first-place votes headed into their first season in the Big 12.
The Longhorns were picked third, followed by defending league champion Oklahoma State. TCU is picked to finish its first year in the league in fifth place.
The Horned Frogs and Kansas State (sixth) each got one first-place vote. Baylor, Iowa State, Texas Tech and Kansas round out the poll.

BIG TEN POWER…The Big Ten is considering a plan to give its commissioner the power to fire coaches in the wake of the Penn State child sex-abuse scandal.
An 18-page plan being circulated among Big Ten leadership would include giving Commissioner Jim Delany the authority to levy sanctions including financial penalties, suspensions and termination of a school employee. The Chronicle said it had obtained a document laying out the details.
The Big Ten did not respond to requests for comment.
Former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky was recently convicted of sexually abusing 10 boys, sometimes on campus. A report commissioned by Penn State said school leaders, including the late coach Joe Paterno, ignored allegations more than a decade ago to avoid bad publicity, allowing Sandusky to prey on other boys for years.
Paterno's family denies that he participated in any attempt at a cover-up.

DAYTON FEELS BAD…Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton has apologized for comparing NFL players in trouble with the law to returning war veterans.
The first-term Democrat said Thursday that he made a poor analogy when he used the comparison in an interview with Minnesota Public Radio.
In that interview, Dayton theorized on the troubles of professional football players, including Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson, and said football was "basically slightly civilized war."
Spokeswoman Katie Tinucci said Dayton had heard from some constituents on the comments and regretted the comparison when he looked back on what he said.

DWU COACHES…Shane Murphy will have a whole new supporting cast surrounding him at practice and on the bench for Dakota Wesleyan men’s basketball games starting in the 2012-13 season.
Tim Weidenbach will serve as the Tiger men’s assistant coach, Jacob Brandl is DWU’s new graduate assistant coach and former men’s basketball player German Madueno returns for a third season with the Tigers, this time as a student assistant coach.
Weidenbach is a familiar name to local basketball fans, as he has spent the last 10 seasons as an assistant girls’ basketball coach at Parkston High School. In the past five seasons, he has helped guide the Trojans to a 100-15 record and a runner-up finish at the Class A state tournament in 2012. Parkston won 184 games, 12 conference titles, seven district titles and went to state twice in his 10 seasons with the programs.

MORNINGSIDE AD…Morningside College has named Tim Jager as its new athletic director. Jager has served for the past eight seasons as Morningside's head wrestling coach and will begin his new duties on August 1.
Jager succeeds Jerry Schmutte, who resigned as Morningside's athletic director at the end of May.  Morningside will immediately begin searching for a new head wrestling coach.
Jager has a 75-41-2 record for a .644 winning percentage at Morningside. He was named the 2011 Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) and National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) North Region Coach of the Year after he guided the Mustangs to their first-ever GPAC and NAIA North Region championships. He also was named the GPAC Coach of the Year in 2012 and in 2008.
