BANDITS…Brookings clinched a spot in the state American Legion baseball tournament Wednesday with a 12-2 win over Sioux Falls Post 307. The Bandits move on to the regional championship game today in Huron.
Watertown eliminated Huron 6-3 earlier in the day. Watertown and Post 307 met late Wednesday for a state tourney berth.
REGION 2A LEGION… Region 2A American Legion results from Mitchell:
Sioux Falls East 6, Sioux Falls West 3 (East qualifies for state tournament)
Valley Springs 10, Sioux Falls West 3 (Valley Springs qualifies for state tournament)
Valley Springs 8, Mitchell 1
REGION 3A LEGION…Region 3A American Legion baseball started Wednesday in Sturgis. The scores:
Rapid City Post 22 9, Rapid City Post 320 8
Sturgis 13, Pierre 4
FLANDREAU LEGION…Flandreau will try to defeat the McCook/Miners for the third time this season when the teams open the state “B” American Legion baseball tourney Friday in Milbank. Game time is 10:00am.
Coach Tom Hanson says pitching’s a Flandreau strength, with six solid arms available. 97628 :22 “to feel confident”.
Hanson says Flandreau’s batting order has been productive, top-to-bottom. 97629 :19 “swing the bat”.
Hanson says Groton’s success over the years makes them a team to watch. But he says Flandreau’s roster has ample post-season experience. 97630 :24 “ready to go”.
For the first time in a number of years, the “B” champion will not advance to next week’s “A” tourney in Aberdeen.
VOLGA TEENER…The Volga 13-14 teener baseball team will face Gregory Friday afternoon to open the VFW “B” junior varsity state tourney in Mt. Vernon.
Coach Ron Puetz (PITTS) says his batting order displayed a mix of speed, and power, throughout the regional tournament.
Volga finished second to Selby/Eureka: 97631 :16 “that’s pretty good”.
Six arms make up the nucleus of the pitching staff – Puetz says the trick is figuring how they’ll best fit in the bracket. 97632 :15 “passes we give”.
Puetz hopes to get a scouting report on Gregory – it’s kind of funny how those things can work: 97633 :12 “the two teams”.
The semi-final round is Saturday, with the title game Sunday afternoon.
NSU FB COACH… Matt McLagan has joined Northern State football coach Tom Dosch’s staff as the defensive line coach.
McLagan replaces Austin Flyger, who has become the defensive line coach at Southern Illinois. McLagan comes to NSU after one season at Jamestown College, where he was the linebackers coach and the strength and conditioning coordinator for the Jimmies. Previously, he spent two seasons as a graduate assistant coach at St. Cloud State where the Minneapolis native was a captain and all-conference linebacker.
YOUTH FB CLINICS…South Dakota head football coach Joe Glenn will be speaking at a pair of South Dakota Junior Football coaches clinics in the region this week.
Glenn will open at the Yankton coaches clinic on Sunday at the First United Methodist Church, located at 207 W 11th Street in Yankton. Start time is 6:30 p.m.
He will be the opening speaker at the Sioux Falls coaches clinic today at 6:30 p.m. The event will be held at Riverdale Park in Sioux Falls.
FOX COLLEGE FB… Eddie George and Joey Harrington will serve as analysts on Fox's new college football studio show.
The main Fox network will start its first regular-season college football package this fall. The network said Wednesday that George and Harrington would join host Erin Andrews, recently hired from ESPN.
George won the 1995 Heisman Trophy for Ohio State. The running back rushed for 10,441 yards in the NFL before retiring in 2004. He worked as an analyst for Fox when it had the BCS title games.
Harrington was a finalist for the 2001 Heisman as a quarterback at Oregon. He never lived up to expectations as the No. 3 pick in the 2002 NFL draft. Harrington has previously worked for Fox Sports Radio.
The show will premiere Sept. 1.
