Huron man gets prison for destructive device charge

HURON, S.D. (AP) - A Huron man charged in a standoff with police that authorities say involved a destructive device has been sentenced to prison.

Judge Jon Erickson sentenced 41-year-old Christopher Santfleben (SANT'-flay-bihn) to four years in the state penitentiary for possessing a destructive device. He will get credit for the one day he spent in the Beadle County Jail. A charge of possessing an explosive device was dropped as part of a plea deal.

Santfleben was arrested in April after a two-hour standoff with police. Authorities say they found gasoline mixed with another ingredient to make a jelly-type substance comparable to napalm.

Santfleben's lawyer, Kent Shelton, told Judge Jon Erickson that alcohol abuse is his client's only problem and that Santfleben has nearly completed an alcohol abuse program.
