BANDITS…Landon Busch settled down after a shaky first inning to strike out 14 Sioux Falls West hitters, and the Brookings Bandits rode two big offensive innings to take a 10-0, seven-inning win Wednesday, to open the state “A” American Legion baseball tourney in Aberdeen.
West had two runners in scoring position in the first, but the Bandits got out of the jam. Brookings scored one in the bottom of the inning, and never trailed.
Brookings will face Rapid City Post 22 at 5:00pm Thursday in a winners bracket game.
STATE “A” LEGION…Greg Schaefer finished the night with three hits, five RBI and two runs scored as Rapid City Post 22 held off Watertown 14-9. Watertown was led by Alex Turback’s three hits and two RBI, and Jonnie Pfeifer added two hits and drove in three.
Sioux Falls East cut loose in the final four innings to defeat Spearfish 16-4 in seven innings. And Valley Springs had built up a 14-5 lead over Aberdeen through seven innings of that game, which was delayed when the water sprinklers on the field came on.
STATE “B” AMATEUR…The Wynot Expos defeated the Colman A’s 2-1 victory in 11 innings in the opening round of the South Dakota State Class B Amateur Baseball tournament.
Colman threatened to break a tie, stranding runners at third in the eighth and ninth innings. Deon Entringer struck out eight in 10 innings of work.
Redfield Dairy Queen put up two runs in the bottom of the ninth to get to extra innings but eventually fell 5-2 to Madison.
The game got a late start and the final out was recorded at 2:58 a.m. on Thursday.
TEENER BALL…The Brookings Bullets 16’s game Wednesday was suspended in the bottom of the second inning with Brookings leading 3-1.
The game is critical to league standings, so the contest will be resumed – perhaps as soon as today. The 16’s will play a single game Friday at 5:00pm in Watertown.
NO WOMEN’S SOCCER AT PRESENTATION…Women's soccer will not be offered at Presentation College this fall due to low recruitment numbers.
Also, coach Jeremy Anderson resigned last month to become the athletic director and boys' basketball coach at Corn (Okla.) Bible Academy. Anderson joined PC in 2011 to help the Saints restart its women's soccer team after the PC programs took a year off due to low numbers.
The PC men's soccer program will start up again this fall. The Saints left the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference at the end of the last school year, and will be starting their first year as NCAA Division III independent in all sports.
