STATE “B” AMATEUR…Thursday scores from the state “B” amateur baseball tourney in Mitchell:

BANDITS REGIONAL…J-J Benes held Brookings to four hits and struck out eight as Papillion, NE Pinnacle Bank defeated the Bandits 7-0 to open the Central Plains Regional American Legion baseball tournament in Dickinson, ND.
   Brookings will face West Fargo in an elimination game Friday morning.  Edina defeated West Fargo 3-2 on a walkoff base hit.
   Bandits coach Rob Hirrschoff says Benes got his fast ball, curve ball and slider over for strikes.  97630   :20   “to do that”.
   Landon Busch allowed seven earned runs and 13 hits over six innings.  He struck out six and walked four.  Hirrschoff says the Bandits didn’t seem like themselves.  97631   :19   “that we had”.
   In other regional games, Omaha Pi Midwest defeated Dickinson 10-0 in seven innings, and defending national champion Eden Prairie scored seven runs in the sixth inning to defeat West Des Moines 9-4.

SDSU FB…South Dakota State football coach John Stiegelmeier’s banking on four areas of improvement this season.
    First, he says the Jacks will run the ball better.  97627   :12   “the football better”.
    Next, SDSU needs to eliminate penalties.  97628   :15   “will not happen”.
    Next, Stiegelmeier says last year’s minus-16 turnover ration has to be corrected.  97629   :21   “need to be”.
    Then, the team has to improve its tackling.
    The Jacks open the season September first at Kansas – the team opened fall practice earlier this week.

OSBORNE-PLAYOFFS...Bowl Championship Subdivision teams now have a four-team playoff to determine a national football champion.  Former Nebraska head coach Tom Osborne says the system's in response to public pressure, but wonders if if the field will go beyond four.  97625   :16   "sixteen-team playoffs".
   Osborne's concerned about the time commitment a playoff system puts on student-athletes.  97626   :21   "concerned about that".
   Osborne was in Brookings Thursday to keynote a Fellowship of Christian Athletes breakfast.

SUMMIT SOCCER… After becoming the first fourth seeded team to win The Summit League Championship, Oakland has been selected as the preseason favorite to repeat for the title in a vote of the league’s nine head coaches.
   The Golden Grizzlies landed five first-place votes, while last season’s regular season champion South Dakota State collected the remaining four first-place tallies. Kansas City edged out North Dakota State by one point for third place, followed by Fort Wayne in the fifth slot. IUPUI and Western Illinois tied for sixth and Omaha while South Dakota tied for eighth place to round out the poll.
   SDSU returns five starters and 12 letterwinners from a team that went 12-6-2, including 8-0-1 in Summit League play. The Jackrabbits have won three regular season titles in their five years in the Summit. SDSU will be led by returning all-league performers Christa Nyblom (5 goals, 11 points) up front and Stephanie Berube (2 points) on the backline.

USF ON THE TUBE… The University of Sioux Falls football team will have five of its six home games aired on KDLT this fall,
To accommodate the TV schedule, the kickoff times of several games have been adjusted.
   Games on TV will include: Sept. 22 vs. Bemidji State, noon; Sept. 29 vs Southwest Minnesota State, 6:30 p.m.; Oct. 27 vs. Upper Iowa, noon; Nov. 10 vs. Wayne State, noon.

MOSS…Former South Dakota State wide receiver and basketball player Dale Moss caught three passes for 29 yards for the    Green Bay Packers in their first preseason game against San Diego Thursday night.
   Moss was second on the team in receiving yards behind Randall Cobb and caught all three of his passes in the second half.
