Brookings police arrest an ax-carrying man on an outstanding warrant.

Lt. Derrick Powers says police were called to a home on the 1200 block
of First St. at about 3:30 Sunday morning.  The resident called 911 to
report that a man carrying an ax had tried to get into the home.  The
homeowner got a gun and showed it to the man who then left. The
ax-wielder returned while the resident was on the phone with police.
However, he again left the area on foot.

Police located the man about a block away. He was not carrying the ax
but it was in a nearby tree.  The 20-year-old Brookings man was arrested
on an outstanding warrant for failure to appear.

Powers says the man seemed confused and told police he was not sure
why he was carrying the ax.  Alcohol was not a factor.

The ax had apparently been taken from a nearby shed.
