Belle Fourche shelter for women vets closes

BELLE FOURCHE, S.D. (AP) - A Belle Fourche homeless shelter for women veterans has closed after being open for less than eight months.

A lawyer for the Women of War Project, Emily Wolff, says the shelter cost more to build than was expected. A federal grant covered only a quarter of the construction cost, when it was budgeted to supply about 60 percent.

Wolff says a second round of federal money didn't come through. She says the shelter also had fewer women homeless veterans than it thought it would get.

The shelter needed to house at least 18 women to be eligible for enough support to break even. When it closed at noon on Monday, there were five women staying there.
