WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 22:
SUMMIT SOCCER POW… Oakland's Kyla Kellermann and Kansas City's Jami Finnell were named The Summit League's Offensive and Defensive Women's Soccer Players of the Week.
Kellermann recorded a hat trick in the win over Rochester College, including the match-winner, to open the season last week. The three goals were the third-highest single-match total in school history. Also nominated: Erin Gill, Fort Wayne; Ashley Gann, Kansas City; Steph Jacobson, North Dakota State; Darci Miller, South Dakota State; Chrissy Campbell, Western Illinois.
Finnell garners her third Defensive Player of the Week in her career after collecting 16 saves in the 1-0 loss at No. 5 Oklahoma State. The 16 saves tied her own school record in a single match. Also nominated: Sam Pavlika, Fort Wayne; Kristin Haseley, IUPUI; Sierra Bonham, North Dakota State; Alyssa Fulton, Oakland; Elisa Stamatakis, South Dakota State; Victoria Kappel, Western Illinois.
HURON VB…The Huron Tiger volleyball team has a number of letterwinners back from last years state tournament team, but a number of girls will need to step up from supporting roles to more prominent ones for this year's team to be successful. Shelly Buddenhagen starts her fourth year, in her second stint, as head coach, and says there aren't a lot of known quantities at this point. 97621 :29 “so far”.
Buddenhagen is satisified with the progress made in preseason workouts. 97622 :17 “fun to watch”.
The Tigers have won back to back district 3 titles, and have made three consecutive trips to the state tournament. Buddenhagen says the ESD should be very competitive, with a slight edge going to Aberdeen. The Tigers open the season Saturday afternoon at Yankton.
STURGIS FB… The Sturgis Scoopers are gearing up for the 2012 football season. Head coach Clint Nelson, who takes over the program after coming over from New Underwood, is hoping for consistency after a 1-8 season last year. 97623 “immediate start here”.
The Scoopers did lose some notable seniors from last year’s squad – running back Dyllan Rather, wideout Jarret Fowler and offensive workhorse Zach Bergman. Returning starters include Quarterback Tanner Weaver. The Junior had a 33 quarterback rating last year, averaging 73 yards passing per game.
Nelson knows he has a young team this year, but says a few wins are possible. 97623 “Sioux Falls schools”.
Sturgis will open the season at Belle Fourche Saturday night – a team that beat them in the opener last year.
This is the last year Sturgis will play the four Sioux Falls schools. Next year, Sturgis will begin playing teams in the Black Hills Conference, but will retain the games against Rapid City Central and Stevens.
