PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - Authorities have identified a man who died in the crash of a single-engine experimental airplane at the Pierre airport as local pilot Paul Lee.
The plane crashed on takeoff Tuesday morning. The Federal Aviation Administration identified it as an SQ2000, a plane that can be built from a kit. Airport Manager Mike Isaacs says the 69-year-old Lee owned the plane.
FAA records show Lee built the plane. He was the only one on board Tuesday.
Officials with the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating. Crews began removing the wreckage Wednesday afternoon. The airport remains open.
