BHS VB…Fifth-ranked Brookings completes the first quarter of its volleyball schedule Thursday night at number two Sioux Falls Roosevelt.
   The Bobcats are coming off a straight-set win at Pierre – head coach Jodi Melius says serving keyed the win.  97629   :14   “lot more involved”.
   Melius says the Roosevelt lineup’s a bit bigger at the net.  97630   :21   “ahead of time”.
   Brookings takes a 4-0 record into the Roosevelt gym.

SDSU VB…South Dakota State hosts a three-team invitational volleyball tournament this weekend at Frost Arena.
   The 5-2 Jackrabbits take on Wisconsin-Green Bay Friday night – SDSU coach Phil McDaniel says the Phoenix will match the Jackrabbits’ size.  97621   :20   “a little bit”.
   Bradley faces SDSU Saturday night – McDaniel says they picked up two big wins last weekend.  97622   :13   “of our M-O”.
   An alumni match that was scheduled Saturday afternoon fell through – McDaniel hopes it can be rescheduled closer to Hobo Day.  Returning volleyball alumni will still be recognized during the tournament.

SE LOUISIANA FB…Southeast Louisiana – coming off a drubbing by Missouri – will host South Dakota State Saturday night in non-conference football.
   Head coach Ron Roberts, and five assistants, came over from Delta State to lead the Lions’ program this season.  Roberts is no stranger to the Jacks’ style.  97623   :19   “they play hard”.
   Lions’ quarterback Nathan Stanley threw a pick-six on his first attempt against Missouri, but Roberts says he bounced back well.  97624   :20   “college football game”.
   Roberts says a win is big, since there have been so few in the program’s recent history.  97625   :35   “I hope so”.
   The Jacks are coming off a 31-17 loss to Kansas last Saturday.

BV FB…Two 2-0 teams battle Friday night when Brandon Valley visits Brookings – game time at Coughlin-Alumni Stadium is 7:00.  You’ll hear the game at 6:30 on KCountry 102.
   Brookings utilized four scoring plays of 20 yards or more to shut out Mitchell last week – still, head coach Lee Schmidt says the Bobcats weren’t consistent offensively.  97626   :23   “finish off drives”.
   Schmidt says the Lynx throw the ball well, and have a good running game.  97627   :29   “for something big”.
   Schmidt says the Bobcats have to be a bit selfish and look out for themselves.  97628   :22   “see more consistency”.
   Through two games, the Bobcats have run the ball almost twice as much as they’ve thrown.

SOFTBALL POLL…Sioux Falls Washington received all nine first-place votes in the latest South Dakota Fastpitch softball rankings.
   Rapid City Central is second followed by Rapid City Stevens. Sioux Falls Roosevelt and Watertown round out the top five.

LETTER BURNING DISPUTE…The traditional burning of the “M” – part of Mitchell High School’s homecoming – is caught between the Davison County Commission, and the Mitchell City Council.
   County commissioners say their “no exceptions” stance to a burn ban includes the burning of the “M”, and a fireworks show planned for after the homecoming game.
   The city council’s Health and Safety Committee approved the fireworks show, and most members say they have no problem with the letter burning.
   No one knows for sure if the city, or county, has precedent when it comes to burn bans, and permits  But the Mitchell Daily Republic reports language in the city burn permit says fireworks are forbidden if a county-wide burn ban is in effect.
   Brookings High School burns a “B” during homecoming week.  And the Brookings County Commission does have a burn ban in effect.

SENIOR GAMES…The 29th annual South Dakota State Senior Games will be held in Madison starting Thursday and running through Sunday. Senior athletes will be competing in various activities throughout the event.
  There will be well over 400 athletes competing in the Senior Games, and over 100 volunteers helping run the event.  It’s the fourth time Madison’s hosted the Senior Games. 
   The top four in each event qualify for the national meet next year in Cleveland.
