SDSU FB…Zach Zenner rushed for the most yards by a South Dakota State running back in the Division I era and the Jackrabbit defense turned in a dominant performance as SDSU got into the win column with a 31-14 victory over Southeastern Louisiana Saturday night at Strawberry Stadium.
   The Jackrabbits improved to 1-1 overall
   Zenner finished the game with 278 yards on 34 carries as the Jackrabbits rushed for 305 yards as a team. Reggie Gandy, seeing his first collegiate action, carried 14 times for 32 yards.
   Austin Sumner completed 8-of-18 passes for 134 yards as the Jackrabbits held a 439-179 advantage in total offense.
   The Jackrabbit defense held Southeastern Louisiana to minus-11 yards rushing, recording eight tackles for loss, including five sacks. Doug Peete recorded four tackles for loss, with two sacks, while Ross Shafrath recorded a team-high eight tackles with two pass breakups.
   The Jackrabbits open the home portion of their schedule Sept. 15, hosting UC Davis in the 17th Annual Cereal Bowl. Kickoff is 2 p.m. at Coughlin-Alumni Stadium.

ZENNER HONORED…South Dakota State University running back Zach Zenner was named Missouri Valley Football Conference Offensive Player of the Week.
   Zenner set career highs for the second week in a row, carrying the ball 34 times for 278 yards and a touchdown as the Jackrabbits evened their record at 1-1. In two games this season, Zenner has gained a Division I-best 461 yards and is averaging 8.1 yards per carry. His 278 yards are the most in a game by a Division I back this season and the second-highest single-game total in all divisions of NCAA football so far in 2012.

SDSU VB…All three matches in the Jackrabbit Invitational went five sets and all three teams won a match, but South Dakota State won the tournament on point differential, despite falling to Bradley 25-21, 29-25, 25-25, 25-13 and 12-15.
   Tournament MVP Kaitlin Klingemann led the Jackrabbits with 15 kills in the losing cause. Kelli Fiegen, who made the all-tournament team, added 14 kills and seven total blocks, three solo and four block assists.
   Shay Birath also made the all-tournament team, posting 19 blocks in the finale and 50 overall for the weekend.
   SDSU defeated Wisconsin-Green Bay 24-26, 23-25, 25-19, 25-17 and 15-7.
   Klingemann led the Jackrabbit offense with 18 kills on the night, adding five block assists, for the Jacks, who won the blocking battle 15-10. Fiegen finished with 14 kills and a match-high eight block assists. Herrmann came up a kill shy of a double-double, finishing with nine to go along with her 22 digs and five block assists.
  Birath led the Jacks with 31 digs and Margit Hansing added 15 digs and seven kills in the win.

BHS FB…Matt Vandeberg returned the opening kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown, and caught two scoring passes from Chase Marso later in the game, as Brandon Valley shut out Brookings 38-0 Friday night in ESD Conference football in Brookings.
   Trey Tripp added two scoring runs for the Lynx, and Marso tacked on a field goal.
   Brookings lost two fumbles and threw two interceptions in the game – plus, turned the ball over on a couple of missed fourth down conversion tries.

SDSU SOCCER…The South Dakota State women's soccer team stumbled at North Dakota, falling 3-1 in its lone game this weekend.
  SDSU surrendered two first-half goals and was unable to fully recover.  Only six minutes into the second half, Stacy Guijarro received a pass from Christa Nyblom and put it in the back of the net to narrow the deficit to one goal. The goal was the first of the season for Guijarro.

BHS TENNIS…The Brookings girls tennis team split two matches Saturday in Huron.
   Brookings got by Huron 5-4 as Lydia Lucchesi, Yixuan Le and Laurelle Anderson won in singles, and Brenna Langland and Anderson, along with He and Beth Hildebrandt won in doubles.
   Pierre shut out the Bobcats 9-0.
   Friday, Rapid City Central defeated Brookings 7-2, as He and Anderson won in singles play.  Watertown got by Brookings 8-1 – the Bobcat win from He at number four singles.

SDSU GOLF…The South Dakota State University women’s golf team wrapped up the Redbird Invitational on Sunday, finishing 13th out of 15 teams to open the fall season.  The Jackrabbits shot rounds of 318, 338 and 325 for a two-day total of 981.
   Individually, senior Morgan Fitts finished in a tie for 15th at 232. The top-25 finish was the 11th of her career, moving her in a tie for second on the SDSU career top-25 finishes list.
   Freshman Michaela Kouri carded a 244 and finished in a tie for 43rd. Fellow freshman Sydney McDonald finished in a tie for 59th with 250.
   Sophomore Alli Plath posted 255 to finish in a tie for 70th. Finishing in 84th, freshman Brianna Janu shot a 269 two-day score.
   Katie Jean from host school Illinois State was the top golfer of the tournament with rounds of 70, 75 and 73 (218) to finish with a four stroke lead. Toledo took top team honors with rounds of 303, 307 and 305 (915), winning by 13 strokes and placing three golfers in the top-15.
   The Jacks are back in action at the inaugural Jackrabbit Fall Invitational at the Minnehaha Country Club in Sioux Falls, S.D. on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1.

SDSU XC…The South Dakota State women’s Cross Country finished third at the Oz Memorial.
Laura Lawton led the young Jackrabbit team with a 10th place finish with a time of 23:29.33.  Cheyanne Bowers was 16th, Samantha Anderson 22nd, Jessica Eibs 28th, and Kirsten Anderson 41st.
   Minnesota took first with 15 points, Drake finished second with 76 points, Minnesota State Mankato and South Dakota State tied for third with 105 points. Northern Iowa was in fourth one point behind the Mavericks and Jackrabbits. In last was Minnesota Duluth with 126 points.
   The South Dakota State men had a second place finish, led by Trent Lusignan, who was third in 19:01.28. Jared Ailts was fifth, Joel Reichow was eighth, Jensel Orlow placed 23rd, Philip LaVallee 29th, Connor Branick 32nd, Austin Hamm 37th, Kipp Kinsley 47th, Grant VanKeulen 48th and Dylan Slaba 49th.
   As a team, the Jackrabbits scored 68 points, 18 behind first place and host Minnesota.

BOBCAT BACKERS…The first Bobcat Backers social of 2012 is set for Monday starting at 7:00 at the Elks.  Fall coaches will be on hand to give updates on their teams and their progress thus far in 2012.  In addition, we'll have food on hand as part of a free-will donation.
   Bobcat Backers membership forms will also be on hand for those needing to sign up for their 2012 membership. Registration for an entire family is just $25.00.
