SDSU VB…South Dakota State closed its match with North Dakota State on a 34-10 run over the last set an a half, en route to a 21-25, 25-22, 25-15 and 25-9 win Sunday afternoon. The Jackrabbits improve to 9-3 overall and 2-0 in The Summit League.
   Kaitlin Klingemann led a balanced Jackrabbit attack with 14 kills, with three of the team’s eight service aces, four digs and a pair of block assists. Kelli Fiegen rebounded from a slow start to finish with 12 kills and a match-high five block assists. Bailey Philippot added seven kills and four blocks, while Margit Hansing finished with six kills and four aces. Shay Birath led the Jackrabbit defense with 27 digs, while Kelly Herrmann finished with 14 digs to go with her five kills and one block assist.
   Brynn Joki led the visitors with a match-high 20 kills, Megan Lambertson added 11 and Carissa Whalen 10 kills in the loss. Andrea Henning led the Bison defense with 18 digs.

    SDSU defeated Nebraska-Omaha 25-16, 25-23 and 25-16 Friday. Philippot led the Jackrabbits, and tied for match-high honors, with 10 kills, adding a solo block and four block assists. Fiegen and Herrmann both added seven kills, with Fiegen adding a solo block and a block assist for the Jacks, who won the blocking battle 11-3. Herrmann also helped out on defense with 10 digs. Hansing posted 19 digs to go with her three kills and two service aces, while Birath led the defense with 20 digs.
   Kelley Wollak led the Mavericks with 10 kills. Kimberley Bailey led the UNO defense with 13 digs.

SDSU SOCCER…The South Dakota State women's soccer team blew out Northern Iowa 4-0 Sunday.
   Alyssa Brazil scored the first goal in the third minute, assisted by Christa Nyblom, and the Jacks never looked back.
   Darci Miller, Diana Potterveld and Stacy Guijarro scored the other SDSU goals.  Caylee Costello had an assist.
   Megan Kingston had two shots on goal.  Elisa Stamatakis was the winning goalkeeper.

   Iowa State edged SDSU 2-1 Friday night.  Dani Patterson assisted Nyblom on the Jacks’ only goal in the second half.  Delaney Ratcliffe had two shots on goal for the Jackrabbits.

SDSU FB…Zach Zenner rushed for 197 yards and two touchdowns, and the Jackrabbit defense held UC Davis without an offensive touchdown as South Dakota State opened the home season with a 12-8 victory Saturday.  With its win in the 17th Annual Cereal Bowl, SDSU improved to 2-1 overall.
   Zenner scored on runs of 69 and 23 yards.  Austin Sumner completed 20-of-34 passes for 191 yards and Daughters led the receiving corps with five catches for 35 yards. Trevor Tiefenthaler caught four balls for 35 yards.  T-J Lally finished the day with 10 tackles - all solo - and four sacks. Ross Shafrath added 10 tackles, while Marshall Peugh chipped in with seven tackles, including a sack.
   For UC Davis, Randy Wright completed 16-of-25 passes for 116 yards. Backup London Lacy was 6-of-7 passing for 67 yards. Tim Benton led Aggie receivers with five catches for 66 yards.  Marquis Nicolis gained 39 yards on the ground on eight carries for the Aggies.

LALLY, SAWYER HONORED…South Dakota State linebacker T.J. Lally was named Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week and punter Ethan Sawyer earned special teams honors following their performances in the Jackrabbits' 12-8 victory over UC Davis on Sept. 15.
   Lally paced a Jackrabbit defense that did not allow an offensive touchdown with 10 tackles (all solo), including four sacks. The redshirt freshman from Chicago also recovered a fumble on the Aggies' final offensive play to preserve the victory.
   Sawyer punted seven times for an average of 47.9 yards, including a career-long 72-yarder in the contest and prevented UC Davis from recording any punt returns on the afternoon.

SATURDAY COLLEGE FB…Indiana State’s Shakir Bell set the all-time Missouri Valley Football rushing record with 349 yards in Indiana State’s 27-10 win against Drake.  Other college scores:

BHS FB…Austin Wagner ran for 171 yards and a touchdown, Lane Severyn caught two touchdown passes from Alex Gray as Pierre held off Brookings 34-26 Friday night in ESD Conference football in Pierre.
   Austin Christopherson also caught a scoring pass from Gray, and Jace Jerome added a 23-yard run.
   Jon Lehman opened the Bobcat scoring late in the first quarter, catching a 22-yard pass from Caleb Vig.  Zach Page caught a 25-yard scoring pass just ahead of halftime, to put Brookings within seven at 21-14.
   Mike Daniel scored twice in the second half, on a four-yard run and a seven-yard pass reception.  Daniel finished with 116 yards rushing on 17 carries.
   Brookings hosts Yankton Friday night in the Bobcat homecoming game – kickoff is at 7:00 at Coughlin-Alumni Stadium.

SDSU XC…South Dakota State runners claimed three of the top four spots en route to the men’s team title at the SDSU Classic Friday night at Edgebrook Golf Course.
    Trent Lusignan paced the Jackrabbit contingent by placing first out of 69 runners in the 8,000-meter race with a time of 24 minutes, 59.13 secondsLusignan finished 20 seconds ahead of his nearest competitor, teammate Michael Krsnak.
   Jared Ailts finished fourth, while Drew Kraft added a ninth-place time.  Kenny Mayer rounded out the scoring effort for the Jackrabbits in twelfth. Phillip LaVallee and Andrew Thies turned in top-20 performances.
   The Jackrabbits cruised to the team title with 25 points, followed by Minnesota State, Moorhead with 60 points and North Dakota State at 80.

   Runners from the University of Minnesota claimed the first nine spots as the Golden Gophers finished with a perfect score of 15. Molly Kayfes led Minnesota with a winning time of 17 minutes, 15.82 seconds.
   The Jackrabbits’ five scoring runners were tightly packed, finishing within 21 seconds of each other. Laura Wolles clocked the top time of 18:27.24 to finish 16th overall, followed by Tera Potts in 17th and Erin Hargens in 18th. Cheyanne Bowers placed 20th Laura Lawton 23rd.  Courtney Neubert added a 25th-place finish.
   SDSU finished in the runner-up spot out of seven collegiate teams with 73 points, followed by North Dakota with 100 points and North Dakota State at 102.

SDSU TENNIS…The South Dakota State men's tennis team completed competition at the Bradley Classic on Sunday...
    Parker Lawley dropped both of his matches Sunday in straight sets. He finished the classic at 1-3 overall, fourth among Flight 1 competitors.
   In Flight 2, Andrea Bogić won the final match of his day over the opponent from Bradley, 6-2, 6-0. Bogić dropped his first match in a third-set super tiebreaker and finished the classic at 1-3 overall.
   James Thorp battled through tiebreakers in two of his four sets, but suffered two straight-set losses in Flight 3 to finish 0-4.
In Flight 4, Lucas Pereira also lost two matches in straight sets and finished 0-4.
   Henrique Pereira, the only Jackrabbit to play three matches on Saturday, dropped his lone Flight 5 match in a third-set super tiebreaker 6-3, 2-6, 10-0. He finished the classic at 0-4.
   Mateus Moreira won the final match of his classic in Flight 6 over the opponent from DePauw 6-2, 7-6 (4). Moreira finished fourth with a 1-3 record.
   In Flight 7, Luis Duque opened the day with a win over the opponent from DePauw 7-5, 6-7 (4), 10-5. He finished the classic at 1-3 and in fourth.
   Luke Elifson followed suit in Flight 8, winning his final match of the classic over the opponent from Bradley. Elifson finished 1-3 and fourth.

SDSU RODEO…The SDSU men’s rodeo team took first place and the women’s team a close second at the first NIRA college rodeo of the season at River Falls, Wisconsin.
   Top cowboys and cowgirls were Marshall Peterson winning the tie down roping, Calder Johnston winning the steer wrestling and Tarin Hupp and Meg McPadden finishing one-two in the goat tying.
   The men’s team has taken first place in the past four years in River Falls, including this year.
    SDSU will compete in Ft. Dodge Oct 4-5th and Ames Oct 6-7th.  A trip to Fargo will end the fall season Oct 19-20th.

BHS SOFTBALL…Brookings swept a Sunday softball doubleheader at Watertown, winning the opener 7-6 and taking the second game 9-3.
   Brianna Kreutner highlighted a Brookings rally in the first game with a three-run homer.  Alex DeGroot, Katy Kilpatrick and Kreutner each had triples – Kreutner drove in four runs.  Katilyn Bassett went the distance for the win. 
   Brookings broke open game two with an eight-run fourth inning.  Kelly McClain fired a four-hitter to get the win.  DeGroot, Kilpatrick and Anne Jonas each had two hits.
   The Bobcat J-V team defeated Watertown 13-3, and Harrisburg 7-1.
