BHS FB…Unbeaten Yankton visits Brookings Friday night for the Bobcats’ homecoming football game. Kickoff at Coughlin-Alumni is at seven – live coverage begins at 6:30 on KCountry 102.
Brookings coach Lee Schmidt says his team’s no-huddle style eventually wore Pierre down last week in a 34-26 loss, but the Bobcats allowed too many big plays. 97628 :28 “the job done”.
Schmidt says Yankton’s been successful running the ball, but the Bucks’ passing game is just as lethal. 97629 :29 “on Yankton yet”.
Schmidt says the offensive line’s been the Bucks’ catalyst. 97630 :41 “lot of people”.
Schmidt says Brookings has to mix the run and pass to keep Yankton’s defense off-balance.
HURON REPLAYS… Huron High School teacher Mike Carda (SAR-duh) has begun restoring a number of Tiger football games from the 1950's thru 80's captured on film.
Carda says the project began a few years ago when he discovered a number of game tapes on 16 millimeter film in an old office. Most of the tapes were aging, and Carda said he felt they should be saved. 97625 :24 “went from there”.
Carda explains the process of copying the original film to DVD. 97626 :31 “on that card”..
Games into the late 60’s were played at the old stadium off Dakota Avenue in Huron - he says it's hard to spot a ot of differences from the Tigers’ current home. 97627 :27 “interesting that way”.
Carda has converted games with Sioux Falls Lincoln, Aberdeen, Rapid City Central, and both Watertown and Brookings from 1968 and 74. The oldest film he found was between Huron and Watertown from 1957, and just about everybody in the ESD, including former member Madison, have films.
There is no sound with the films, but a few of the more recent games are in color. The 1967 games are being shown on the Huron cable television system.
SDSU FB…South Dakota State opens the Missouri Valley Football Conference schedule Saturday at Indiana State. The game features the top two runners in Division I – the Sycamore’s Shakir Bell and SDSU’s Zach Zenner.
Jacks’ head coach John Stiegelmeier says Indiana State coach Trent Miles has done a great job in a short time. 97634 :23 “great job there”.
SDSU’s defense held the Cal-Davis offense to about 230 yards last week – Stiegelmeier’s happy with the defense and the way it does its job. 97635 :35 “the pass game”.
You’ll hear the game on the Ranch 910AM, starting at noon with the pre-game show.
SDSU FB SKED… South Dakota State and Iowa State have reached an agreement to play each other in the 2018 football season opener.
The game is set for Saturday, Sept. 1, 2018, at Jack Trice Stadium in Ames, Iowa. The teams last played in 2008, with the Cyclones winning 44-17 on their home field.
SDSU now has four games against Football Bowl Subdivision opponents scheduled for future seasons: 2013 at Nebraska, 2014 at Missouri, 2015 at Minnesota and 2018 at Iowa State.
The Cyclones have won the three previous meetings in the series, which dates back to 1952.
ROME RETURNS…Nebraska coach Bo Pelini has announced that defensive tackle Chase Rome has returned to the team and will be available to play Saturday against Idaho State.
Rome left the team last week after starting the first two games. Pelini said Thursday that Rome has been practicing all week.
The sophomore from Columbia, Mo., didn't play much in the second half of the Cornhuskers' 36-30 loss at UCLA. Pelini said last week that Rome's "personal goals and personal perception of where he should be on this football team doesn't match the team goals."
Rome had four tackles in the first two games.
2013 PARK LICENSES… The 2013 annual park entrance license for South Dakota's state parks and recreation areas go on sale October 1. The 2013 park entrance license is valid from October first through May 18, 2014. Purchasers of one license can also buy a second license at half price.
The license is required for entrance into designated state parks, recreation areas and lakeside-use areas, although it does not cover camping costs or other fees.
Entrance licenses can be purchased at local state park offices or by calling the South Dakota Division of Parks and Recreation.
The 2013 annual entrance license features the image of a soaring eagle. Parks near the dams on the Missouri River offer excellent opportunities for bald eagle viewing in winter months.
AD SUDDENLY QUITS…Brian DeAngelis has resigned as Texas A&M-Kingsville's athletic director after just 80 days on the job.
The university announced the resignation in a terse one-sentence statement on Thursday. The statement said the move was effective Wednesday.
University Chief of Staff Randy Hughes told the Corpus Christi Caller-Times that DeAngelis didn't give a reason for his resignation. A message left at DeAngelis' home by The Associated Press on Thursday evening wasn't returned.
Vice President for Institutional Advancement D. Scott Gines will assume operational control of the athletic department as a search for a new director begins.
