SDSU FB…South Dakota State bottled up the Indiana State running game while its own running back, Zach Zenner, rushed for 237 yards and a touchdown as the Jackrabbits knocked off the 22nd-ranked Sycamores, 24-10, in the Missouri Valley Football Conference opener for both teams Saturday afternoon at Memorial Stadium.
SDSU improved to 3-1 overall. Indiana State dropped to 2-2 on the season.
The Jackrabbits scored on their opening drive, marching 69 yards on 15 plays before a 37-yard field goal by Justin
Indiana State back Shakir Bell was held in check the entire day, gaining only 54 yards on 18 carries. His longest run of the day was five yards.
Linebacker Ross Shafrath led Jackrabbit tacklers with 11 stops, followed by 10 tackles and an interception by T.J. Lally. Marshall Peugh and David Hettiger were each credited with two sacks.
Zenner’s 237 yards came on 29 carries – an average of 8.2 yards per carry. Backup Reggie Gandy added 58 yards on 10 carries as SDSU held a 297-23 advantage in net rushing yards.
The Jackrabbits struggled in the passing game as Sumner completed only 6-of-19 attempts for 51 yards. Daughters caught two passes for 28 yards, while Aaron Rollin returned to the lineup with a pair of catches for 17 yards.
For Indiana State, Mike Perish completed 27-of-46 passes for 219 yards. Demory Lawshe led all receivers with nine catches for 62 yards, with Michael Mardis adding five catches for 59 yards.
Aaron Archie led Indiana State with 11 tackles.

LALLY HONORED AGAIN…For the second week in a row, South Dakota State University linebacker T.J. Lally has received weekly Missouri Valley Football Conference honors.
Lally was named as both the MVFC Defensive Player of the Week and Newcomer of the Week for his performance in the Jackrabbits' league-opening win over 22nd-ranked Indiana State on Sept. 22.
Lally recorded 10 tackles, including a half-tackle for loss, and added an interception and two more pass breakups in the win over the Sycamores. For the game, SDSU held Indiana State to 23 net yards rushing on 25 attempts. The Jackrabbits limited Walter Payton Award candidate Shakir Bell to 54 yards on 18 carries and, other than on a fake punt, did not allow a rushing play of more than five yards.
Lally previously earned MVFC Newcomer of the Week and Sports Network National Freshman of the Week recognition after tallying four sacks in a Sept. 8 home victory over UC Davis.
BHS FB…Yankton amassed 442 yards offense in Friday’s 19-0 ESD Conference football win over Brookings Friday at Coughlin-Alumni Stadium.
Levi Davis led the Bucks’ ground game with 112 yards on 23 carries and a touchdown. Quarterback Michael Rucker ran for a score, and completed 15-of-18 passes for 205 yards, including a 32-yarder to J-J Hejna. Hejna finished with five catches for 75 yards.
Yankton also missed three field goal tries.
Brookings had 127 yards offense – only 27 of it on the ground. Mike Daniel led the running game with 17 yards. The Bobcats completed 9-of-18 passes, with Dayton Bender, Jon Lehman, Zack Page and Daniel each getting two receptions. Daniel’s catches were good for 27 yards.
Brookings hosts Sioux Falls O’Gorman Friday – Yankton plays Sioux Falls Roosevelt.

SDSU VB…South Dakota State defeated Western Illinois Saturday night 25-16, 21-25, 25-23 and 25-20. SDSU improves to 10-4 overall and to 3-1 in The Summit League. Western Illinois falls to 7-8 overall and to 2-3 in league play.
The Jackrabbits finished with a 14-9 edge in team blocks, led by Kelli Fiegen, who posted a match-high nineblocks, eight block assists and one solo block. She also knocked down 11 kills for the Jacks in the win.
Kaitlin Klingemann led way with 14 kills, adding a pair of service aces and four block assists. Kelly Herrmann pitched in with nine kills to go along with her 11 digs and three blocks, two assist and one solo.
Shay Birath finished with 25 digs to lead the defense, and Lexi Fowler added 10 digs to go with her 27 set assists for her team-high fourth double-double of the season.
Ann Miller led the visitors with 16 kills. Kaitie Hosteng added 12 kills in the loss.

IUPUI defeated SDSU Friday 25-16, 25-19, 19-25, 15-25 and 15-11. Klingemann led the Jackrabbit offense with 15 kills, Fiegen added 13 and Bailey Philippot 10 kills in a losing cause. Herrmann finished 14 kills and 13 digs to complete the Jackrabbits only double-double. Birath led the defense with 26 digs, while Margit Hansing finished with 11 digs to go along with her five kills.
Keley Hoefer led four Jaguars withdouble figure kills with a match-high 20. Bethany Folger added 15, Kaitlyn Hickey 14 and Moriah Fair 12 kills in the win. Fair also added 26 digs to complete the double-double. Beth Howard led the IUPUI defense with 27 digs.

SDSU EQUESTRIAN…The South Dakota State equestrian team earned two of the four most outstanding player awards, but fell to top-ranked Texas A&M by a score of 15-5 Saturday in both team’s season-opener.
Senior Lauren Kerr earned MOP honors for the Jackrabbits in equitation on the flat with ascore of 78, while junior Laura Dunlavy posted a 71.5 in reining to earn MOP honors.
The Jackrabbit western squad scored a total of three points, with senior Kelsey Champagne scoring the Jacks lone point in horsemanship. Senior Jana Basler and Dunlavy scored the two reining points.
The Aggies swept the points in equitation over fences, but the Jacks got points from Kerr and senior Megan Violand on the flat.
Violand originally scored an 84 over fences riding Krokodile, but the horse came uplame after her ride, forcing her into a re-ride, where she scored a 64.

BHS TENNIS…Brookings defeated Milbank 6-3, but lost 8-1 to Sioux Falls Roosevelt Saturday in high school girls’ tennis.
Emmia Lucchesi, Brenna Langland, Yixuan He, Laurelle Anderson and Beth Hildebrandt won singles matches against Milbank. He and Hildebrandt picked up a victory at number three doubles.
He won at number four doubles against Sioux Falls Roosevelt.
