The girls’ championship will have Aberdeen Central against O’Gorman. The Golden Eagles defeated St. Thomas More 6-0 Thursday, while the Lady Knights got by Groton 3-0.
BHS FB…The I-29 football rivalry resumes Friday night when Brookings visits Watertown in ESD Conference play. Air time on KCountry 102 is at 6:30, with kickoff at Watertown Stadium at 7:00pm.
Brookings coach Lee Schmidt says throw out the records – this’ll be a knock-down, drag-out. 97633 :08 “a great game”.
Schmidt says Watertown will show multiple offensive sets, and a 4-3 defense. 97634 :18 “haven’t seen already”.
Schmidt says the Bobcat offense has to sustain drives, and score points. The defense has to avoid the big play. 97635 :19 “that’s what’s disappointing”.
Watertown defeated Aberdeen Central 28-14 last Friday to snap a four-game losing streak, while O’Gorman knocked off Brookings 35-19.
NDSU-YOUNGSTOWN…Two of the top three FCS teams in the nation play at the FargoDome Saturday, when number-three Youngstown State meets top-ranked NDSU.
Each team is 4-0 – Youngstown is the last team to have beaten the Bison, having edged them by three points last year in Fargo.
NDSU head coach Craig Bohl says the Penguins have assumed the personality of their coach, Eric Wolford. 97631 :20 “their top rating”.
Wolford, in turn, says the Bison are a well-coached, well-disciplined team. 97632 :28 “a great game”.
To magnify things, it’s also North Dakota State’s homecoming game.
SDSU FB…The South Dakota State football team’s enjoying a luxury it hasn’t had for about four years – a mid-season bye week.
Head coach John Stiegelmeier says the break gives players a chance to rest, heal injuries, catch up on schoolwork, or visit family. He says the team’s been looking forward to it like a holiday. 97636 :18 “forward to it”.
The Jacks hit the break with a 4-1 record. Stiegelmeier says they couldn’t have asked for much more. 97637 :18 “keep on track”.
The Jacks host Western Illinois next Saturday, and have upcoming games with Youngstown State, North Dakota State, Illinois State and Northern Iowa.
DEER LICENSES…The South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Department has taken reports of dead deer across many counties in southeast and south-central parts of the state, and has taken actions to reduce harvest and encouraging hunters to visit early with landowners to determine local impacts and opportunities.
GFP commissioners took emergency action Thursday giving department secretary Jeff Vonk authority to immediately reduce the number of licenses available prior to the second drawing of the East River Deer hunting season.
Vonk says all unsold licenses have been removed from deer hunting units in Bon Homme, Hutchinson, Yankton, Clay, Union and Charles Mix counties. Also, all unsold licenses in southern Perkins County have been eliminated.
Hunters have been given the option of turning in their license if they feel it is in their best interest to cancel their hunting plans. The license and associated tags must be returned to the GFP Licensing Office before the start of that respective season. If applicable, GFP will reinstate hunter preference points for the first drawing.
TWINS CHANGES… The Minnesota Twins have fired five coaches and their head athletic trainer in the wake of a second straight last-place finish in the AL Central.
Longtime bullpen coach Rick Stelmaszek, bench coach Scott Ullger, third base coach Steve Liddle, first base coach Jerry White, hitting coach Joe Vavra and head athletic trainer Rick McWane did not have their contracts renewed for 2013. The team says Ullger and Vavra will be reassigned within in the organization.
Earlier this week, coach Ron Gardenhire said he would prefer to have his staff back next season. Four of the five fired coaches have been with Gardenhire since 2002. Vavra joined the team in 2006.
Stelmaszek has been with the organization since 1978.
NEBRASKA AD… Shawn Eichorst has resigned as Miami's athletic director for the same role at Nebraska, which gave him a five-year contract to become Tom Osborne's replacement with the Cornhuskers.
For Miami, it's the latest blow to a department bracing for potentially severe NCAA sanctions. Former Maine athletic director Blake James will become the acting AD for the Hurricanes, who were under Eichorst's leadership only since April 2011.
Eichorst's starting salary at Nebraska will be $973,000 annually, believed to be a significant raise over his Miami deal. As a private school, the Hurricanes typically do not release contract information.
Eichorst starts as special assistant to the chancellor Oct. 9 at Nebraska, where the 75-year-old Osborne announced late last month that he will retire Jan. 1.
