USD PROJECTS…The University of South Dakota wants to separate its $58 million athletic facility expansion plan into two separate projects.
USD athletic director David Sayler says the university wants flexibility to build the projects in phases instead of waiting for all the money together.
The school will make a request to the state Board of Regents Wednesday.
The initial estimate for the projects included $40.3 million for a new 6,000-seat basketball and volleyball arena, $10.6 million for a connector building from the DakotaDome and $7.9 million for an outdoor track and soccer complex.
USD is now seeking approval of a $10.6 million Science, Health and Research Lab facility for the occupational therapy, physical therapy, physician's assistant, and kinesiology and sports sciences programs.
BIG 12 FB… In the span of a year, the Big 12 has gone from turmoil to terrific television.
A conference whose football future was uncertain with the defections of Nebraska, Colorado, Missouri and Texas A&M over the past two seasons has landed squarely on its feet.
The Big 12 has two teams in the top 10 and is the only conference with eight schools that have one or fewer losses.
Newcomer West Virginia has proven to be a great fit for the high-scoring conference, and quarterback Geno Smith is at the center of Heisman Trophy talk.
No. 5 West Virginia and No. 6 Kansas State are the early front-runners, with Oklahoma and Texas trying to keep pace while settling the Red River rivalry in Dallas on Saturday.
IOWA HOOLIGANS… Iowa senior cornerback Micah Hyde is listed as a starter for Saturday's game at Michigan State despite being arrested over the weekend.
The 21-year-old Hyde was booked early Saturday morning at an Iowa City bar on suspicion of public intoxication and interference with official acts.
Tight end Ray Hamilton and offensive lineman Drew Clark were also arrested in separate alcohol-related incidents, which came during the team's bye week.
Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said he’s disappointed because all three players have been "good citizens" during their time in our program.
Ferentz said the Hawkeyes will follow protocol set by the school's student-athlete code of conduct and take additional measures internally.
Hamilton is also listed on this week's depth chart as a backup.
