SDSU FB…South Dakota State – now the sole leader in the Missouri Valley Football Conference race – visits Northern Iowa Saturday. Live coverage starts at 3:00pm on the Ranch 910AM, with kickoff at 4:05pm.
The Jacks capitalized on kickoff and interception returns for touchdowns in last week’s 31-10 win over Western Illinois. Zach Zenner ran for about 170 yards and two touchdowns – head coach John Stiegelmeier says opponents are focusing on the Jacks’ running game. 9762A :35 “a lot tougher”.
SDSU faces a string of tough matchups – Stiegelemeier says it’ll be a great league race. 9762B :39 “be a battle”.
Northern Iowa is 1-5, with four straight losses – Stiegelmeier says the Panthers could easily be 4-2, had a few plays gone their way.
SDSU last won at the UNI-Dome in 1978.
SDSU WBB… The South Dakota State University women's basketball team has been picked to repeat as Summit League champions, according to poll conducted among league coaches, sports information directors and select media.
The Jackrabbits received 22 of 25 first-place votes. Kansas City was tabbed second in the preseason poll, receiving one first-place vote. IUPUI and Fort Wayne also each received one first-place vote.
Ashley Eide was the lone Jackrabbit to be named to the preseason all-Summit League first team. Eide averaged 10.9 points and 4.8rebounds per game in earning second-team all-Summit League recognition during the 2011-12 campaign.
Head coach Aaron Johnston says this year’s seniors don’t have the resumes of some prior senior players. 9762C :24 “grow into that”.
Johnston says SDSU needs to find its game sooner this year. 9762D :26 “in the year”.
Johnston says Steph Paluch isn’t 100 percent from a knee injury suffered last March, but is participating in all the practices. Megan Waytashek and Gabby Boever – who were also injured last year – are also back in action.
STATE XC…The state high school cross country meet will be held Saturday at Broadland Creek near Huron.
Each of the six defending team champions return to the competition in 2012, highlighted by four squads that can each capture a third-consecutive state title: Sioux Falls Roosevelt, Cheyenne-Eagle Butte, Parker, and Ipswich . Spearfish is the defending girls class ‘A’ champ, while Yankton looks to repeat in the ‘AA’ Girls, which would give the Gazelles their eighth team title in ten years.
Duane Jongeling of Parker is the lone returning individual champion among the six classes. Jongeling will look to complete his own three-peat, having been the class ‘B’ boys champion in 2010 and 2011.
