HONORING LORIN… An area football officiating crew is remembering one of its own. Tim Dockendorf, Ed Fiegen, Jimmy Matarese (MAT-ah-REE-see), Brian Young, Craig Falor (FAY-lor) and Dave Hunsley are honoring crew member, Lorin
Larson, who died recently from injuries in a hunting accident.
Larsen was the referee in the crew, who is identified with a white hat. But as Ed Fiegen says, they decided acting referee Brian Young would wear a black hat during their games. 97621 :25 “a white hat”.
Two games last week featured a moment of silence for Larsen, a basketball and football official for the past 25 years. Fiegen says most of the crew had worked with Larsen for a long time. 97622 :21 “a football crew”.
The crew still plans to work the state football playoffs. Fiegen credits the state activities association for helping make sure
the crew would be eligible. 97623 :21 “do the playoffs”.
Fiegen says the crew ask the state if they can continue their tribute during the playoffs.
SOCCER POW… South Dakota State women’s soccer defender Dani Patterson was named Summit League Defensive Player of the Week.
Patterson started both games for the Jacks this weekend, a pair of one-goal, shutout wins versus Kansas City and South Dakota. Patterson and the SDSU defense held both teams to four shots on goal and stifled some of the top forwards in the league.
The Jacks jumped ahead of the Kangaroos in the league standings with the wins.
The wins kept SDSU’s postseason hopes alive as it heads to Omaha for its regular season finale. Game time is set for 3 p.m. on Friday in Omaha, Neb.
UND SIGN… Workers are removing the Fighting Sioux sign from outside North Dakota's hockey arena after a years-long fight with the NCAA.
Large white letters reading "Home of the Fighting Sioux" were being taken down Monday at Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks.
It's one of six signs that must be removed under an agreement with the NCAA in a decades-old controversy about whether the school's nickname and logo were insensitive to local American Indian tribes. The logo depicts an American Indian warrior.
Arena spokesman Chris Semrau tells The Grand Forks Herald that removing the sign will take most of the week. It'll be replaced next month with one reading "Home of North Dakota Hockey."
But many other harder-to-remove logos will remain, including a 10-foot sketch in the hockey arena's granite floor.
