BHS VB…Third-seed Brookings opens District 1AA play Thursday night at Sioux Falls Roosevelt – match time is 7:00pm
   Bobcat head coach Jodi Melius says the team’s playing well, despite a hiccup at Mitchell to end the regular season.  She says Brookings’ defense has improved in the second half.  97624   :16   “past our block”.
   Roosevelt’s Maggie DeJong had 19 kills in the regular season meeting – Melius says she’s not Roosevelt’s only hitter.  97625   :12   “up that night”.
   The winner will play the O’Gorman-Watertown winner for a trip to the state tournament.

BLIZZARD…The Brookings Blizzard – coming off a sweep of Coulee Region – visit rival Aberdeen for NAHL Central Division games Thursday and Friday.
   Blizzard coach Cory Laylin says Aberdeen’s had some internal issues, but expects they’ll be prepared to play.  97633   :21   “their old team”.

TRY HOCKEY FREE…A “Try Hockey for Free” event is coming up Saturday at Larson Ice Center.  There will be two sessions – 9:00-10:00am, and 10:30-11:30am.
   The day is designed to give boys and girls ages 4-to-9 a chance to experience ice hockey for the first time, and learn the basics safely, and at no cost.
   All equipment, including skates, helmets and sticks will be provided.  Each participant will receive a jersey to keep and a ticket to a future Brookings Blizzard game.

SDSU VB…South Dakota State’s volleyball team can set itself up for the post-season with wins Friday at South Dakota, and Sunday at Missouri-Kansas City.
   Head coach Phil McDaniel says the Jacks currently hold fourth place in the league standings by one match.  97632   :29   “chance to breathe”.
   The top four teams in the regular season standings advance to the post-season tourney, where the winner gets an automatic NCAA tourney bid.

ARLINGTON FB…The Arlington Cardinals face a formidable foe – Canistota – Saturday in the Class 9A football playoff semifinals.  Kickoff is set for 6:00pm.
   Head coach Steve Gilbertson says different players have stepped up during the post-season, and the defense has been making stops.  97628   :20   “up this week”.
   Gilbertson says the Cardinals face a talented Canistota team.  97629   :28   “advantage to them”.
   The winner will face either Warner or Herried/Selby Area for the state title.

FLANDREAU FB…Flandreau visits the Leahy Bowl in Winner Saturday to face the Warriors in a Class 11B football semifinal matchup.
   The Fliers have gotten out quickly against Canton and St. Thomas More – head coach Chad Stadem says the wealth’s been spread around offensively, and the defense has done the job.  97630   :28   “to normally go”.

   The forecast calls for rain and cool temperatures – Stadem says that shouldn’t be a factor.

SO ILL FB…Southern Illinois – which saw a three-game winning streak snapped last week at North Dakota State – will host SDSU Saturday in Missouri Valley Conference football.  Live coverage starts at 1:00pm on the Ranch AM910.
   Salukis’ head coach Dale Lennon says special teams play sparked the run of wins.  97626   :26   “on the game”.

   Lennon says the Jacks’ defense isn’t fancy – they just get you stopped.

NEBRASKA-MARTINEZ…Nebraska's Taylor Martinez is set to break 2001 Heisman Trophy winner Eric Crouch's school career total offense record Saturday against Michigan State.
   Only a junior, Martinez could finish his career as one of college football's most prolific quarterbacks ever.
   But Crouch said Martinez probably needs to win a championship of some kind before he can he be judged as one of the Cornhuskers' all-time great quarterbacks.
   Martinez, who is 23-10 as a starter, has a chance this year. The 21st-ranked Huskers (6-2, 3-1) lead the Big Ten Legends Division going into the game with the Spartans (5-4, 2-3).
   Quarterbacks most often mentioned as Nebraska's greatest are Tommie Frazier (1992-95), Jerry Tagge (1969-71), Turner Gill (1981-83), Scott Frost (1996-97) and Crouch (1998-2001).

SKYFORCE ALUMS…Five former Sioux Falls Skyforce players made opening-day rosters on NBA teams this season.
   They are Amir Johnson with Toronto, Dexter Pittman with Miami, Reggie Williams with Charlotte, and Malcolm Lee and Greg Stiemsma with Minnesota.
   The Skyforce is holding its 2012 NBA Development League Draft party on Friday at Tinner's Bar and Grill. Sioux Falls has the second overall pick.
   The team's home opener is Saturday, Nov. 24, against the Iowa Energy at the Sioux Falls Arena.
