BLIZZARD… The Aberdeen Wings snapped a three-game losing streak with a 3-2 win over the Brookings Blizzard in Aberdeen.
The Wings took a 1-0 lead just over four minutes into the game on Jordan Heller’s third goal of the season. Craig Lindegard would tie the game at 1-1 six minutes later with a goal and assists from Jordan Stejskal and Jeff Flicker. However, Aberdeen regained the momentum for the rest of the game with a goal just 45 seconds later as Peter Krieger lit the lamp with assists to Patrick Steinhauser and Kyle Kruenegel to give the Wings a 2-1 lead. The Wings would lead the remainder of the game.
In the third period, the Blizzard made things interesting with a goal from Justin Moody with just over two minutes remaining in regulation.
Marcus Zelzer saved 26 of 28 shots for the Wings, while Erick Majerle made 29 saves in the loss for Brookings.
TRY HOCKEY FREE…A “Try Hockey for Free” event is coming up Saturday at Larson Ice Center. There will be two sessions – 9:00-10:00am, and 10:30-11:30am.
The day is designed to give boys and girls ages 4-to-9 a chance to experience ice hockey for the first time, and learn the basics safely, and at no cost.
All equipment, including skates, helmets and sticks will be provided. Each participant will receive a jersey to keep and a ticket to a future Brookings Blizzard game.
Pre-registration is recommended – go to www.tryhockeyforfree.com. Call 690-4292 if you have questions.
SDSU VB…South Dakota State’s volleyball team can set itself up for the post-season with wins Friday at South Dakota, and Sunday at Missouri-Kansas City.
Head coach Phil McDaniel says the Jacks currently hold fourth place in the league standings by one match. 97632 :29 “chance to breathe”.
The top four teams in the regular season standings advance to the post-season tourney, where the winner gets an automatic NCAA tourney bid.
DEUBROOK FB…Gregory visits Deubrook Saturday afternoon in a Class 9AA football playoff semifinal – the Dolphins looking for their first-ever trip to a state championship game.
Deubrook defeated Potter County in overtime in a quarterfinal matchup. Head coach Adolph Shepardson says quarterback Taylor Olson and running back Ryan Knutson led an offense that had to overcome penalties. 97635 :18 “ask each game”.
Shepardson says the Dolphin defense has to know the whereabouts of All-State quarterback Jaden Bartling. 97636 :25 “for long scrambles”.
Deubrook advanced to last year’s semifinals, while Gregory’s been eliminated in the opening round the past two seasons. Shepardson says that could be an edge for the Dolphins.
SDSU FB…South Dakota State continues its march toward a potential FCS playoff spot Saturday at Southern Illinois. Live coverage starts at 1:00pm on the Ranch AM910.
The Salukis are also in the post-season chase. Jacks’ head coach John Stiegelmeier says defense, and special teams, have sparked S-I-U during a three-game win streak. 97637 :26 “be a battle”.
Stiegelmeier says quarterback Austin Sumner, and the passing game, should have some confidence after a 351-yard, five-touchdown effort last week against Youngstown State. 97638 :20 “a good defense”.
SDSU football coach John Stiegelmeier.
SO ILL FB…Southern Illinois – which saw a three-game winning streak snapped last week at North Dakota State – will host SDSU Saturday in Missouri Valley Conference football. Live coverage starts at 1:00pm on the Ranch AM910.
Salukis’ head coach Dale Lennon says special teams play sparked the run of wins. 97626 :26 “on the game”.
Lennon says you can’t look at stats when breaking down the Jacks’ offense. 97627 :23 “film…they’re good”.
Lennon says the Jacks’ defense isn’t fancy – they just get you stopped.
