SIOUX VALLEY VB…Haley Hillestad had 22 kills and Mariah VanderWal 17 kills and four blocks as Sioux Valley defeated Pine Ridge 22-25, 25-14, 29-27, 26-24 to open the state “A” volleyball tournament in Watertown.  The Cossacks will play Sioux Falls Christian in a semifinal match.
   Kaylee VanderWal had 51 set assists and 19 digs for the Cossacks.

ARLINGTON VB…Samantha Boeck recorded 23 kills and three blocks, and Brooke Hennrich 13 kills as Arlington posted a 19-25, 25-12, 25-22, 25-15 win over Andes Central at the “B” volleyball tournament in Mtichell.  The Cardinals draw undefeated Parker in Friday’s semifinals.
   Brett Heuer had 51 set assists and Brooklyn Judstra 22 digs for Arlington.

MEN’S BB… Leonard Washington had 17 points while Luke Martinez scored 21 points as Wyoming rolled over South Dakota 71-51. Casey Kasperbauer had 12 to lead South Dakota.
   Dakota State outscored Trinity Bible 45-27 in the second-half to take an 80-59 win. Yusuf Vinson recorded a double-double of 24 points and pulled down 11 rebounds. Terrell Newton added 18 points.
   Michigan Tech earned a 75-67 non-conference victory over Southwest Minnesota State.  Southwest was led by Jordan Miller’s 15 points, connecting on a team-high four 3-pointers. Nick Smith recorded his third straight double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL…Dakota State defeatedTrinity Bible 84-46 as Courtney Hamblin scored 15 points.
   Northern Iowa had 32 points from non-starters to top South Dakota 63-50.  South Dakota's Nicole Seekamp had 12 points and five rebounds.
   Western Illinois women's basketball team could not stop Missouri's late run and fell 70-61.
   Hailey Houser hit a go-ahead free throw with 21 seconds left, then came up with a steal on the final Saint Louis possession to send the Kangaroos to a 56-53 win.

SDSU VB SIGNEES…South Dakota State head volleyball coach Phil McDaniel has signed three high school players to national letters of intent.  The three are:
• Tiara Gibson – 6-3, MH, Clear Lake, S.D. (Deuel H.S.)
• Mikala Hora – 5-10, OH, Yankton, S.D. (Yankton H.S.)
• Garet Miliner – 5-5, DS, Apple Valley, Minn. (Apple Valley H.S.)
   Gibson finished her high school career with 707 kills, 416 digs, 321 total blocks and 143 services aces. She averaged 13 kills, six blocks and no fewer than five digs per match over the last two years.
   Hora posted at least 300 kills per season in her sophomore through senior seasons and recorded a hitting percentage of at least .257 in those years, with a high of .331 as a junior.
   Miliner earned four varsity letters in high school, and served as a team captain as a senior in 2012. She plays club ball on Northern Lights, and won an AAU National Championship with them in 2012.

SUMMIT VB HONORS…The Summit League released its list postseason all-league honors on Thursday, a list that includes South Dakota State seniors Kelli Fiegen as an all-league selection, Shay Birath as an all-league honorable mention selection and freshman Sydney Howard on the all-freshmen team.
   Fiegen led the Jackrabbits with a .333 hitting percentage and after finishing the season with a team-high 342 kills, 26 solo blocks and 130 block assists.  Birath set a new career digs record, and led the Jackrabbits with 617 digs in her senior season, good for second in The Summit League.  Howard’s 91 total blocks, 84 assists and seven solo, easily led setters in the league, while her 88 kills ranked third among setters.

   A trio of IPFW players earned individual honors, Emily Spencer was named the Player of the Year, Tessa McGill earned Defensive Player of the Year and Megan Steenhuysen collected Setter of the Year. IUPUI’s Kaitlyn Hickey captured Freshman of the Year honors, while Steve Payne was named Coach of the Year.

SDSU GOLF SIGNEES…The South Dakota State men’s golf team has added three student athletes, all signing national letters of intent.  They are:
-Ian Rinken, Sioux Falls, S.D. (Washington High School)
-Trevor Tobin, Brandon, S.D. (Brandon Valley High School)
-Grant Smith, Johnston, Iowa (Johnston High School)
   Rinken is a three-time all-state selection (2010-12) and was the 2011 SDGA Junior Player of the Year and finished in 2nd at the 2011 SDGA Junior Amateur.
   Tobin is a four-time all-state team selection (2009-2012). He’s had great success at the state meet, with three top-10 finishes (2009-2011) which helped him garner a selection on the class AA all-tournament team in 2010 and 2011.
   Smith is ranked as the number one recruit in Iowa according to National Junior Golf Scoreboard. After two second team all-state selections, Smith was named first team all-state in 2012 after posting four wins and tying for second at the class 4A state tournament.

   The women’s team added Hallie Getz of Pierre.  She was an All-ESD Conference and All-State selection the past three seasons, and placed second at the 2012 SDGA Junior Championship and tied for sixth at the SDGA Women's Amateur Championship.

SDSU WRESTLING SIGNEES…South Dakota State has lined up the sixth-best wrestling recruiting class in the nation according to The Open Mat and the Amateur Wrestling News.
   Eight student-athletes joined the Jackrabbit wrestling team on signing day, including three ranked by Amateur Wrestling News.
   Brandon Brunner is a three-time Tennessee state champion and is projected to wrestle at 133/141.
   Hank Goettl is a two-time Arizona state placewinner, including a runner-up finish in 2011 at 130 pounds.
   Colin Holler is a three-time Illinois State Tournament placwinner, placing fifth as a freshman and third as both a sophomore and junior.
   Coltan Laganiere was 48-2 as a junior en route to the 2011 Minnesota Freestyle state championship.
   Paul Mascarenas is a three-time New Mexico state champion, Junior National Freestyle champion and Greco-Roman All-American.
   Nate Rotert of Spearfish is a six-time letterwinner in wrestling, winning the Class A state championship at 195 pounds as a junior and is a three-time state placewinner.
   Matthew Seabold is a two-time Junior National Greco-Roman All-American and placed fourth in the Iowa state meet as a junior.
   Austin Oyen is a South Dakota state champion and three-time state finalist. He is also projected to wrestle at 133/141.

SDSU FB…South Dakota and South Dakota State wrap up the Missouri Valley Football Conference schedule Saturday at 2:00 at Coughlin-Alumni Stadium. 
   The Coyotes are looking for their second win of the year, while the Jacks go for win number eight, and a possible playoff berth.  SDSU head coach John Stiegelmeier says the record’s deceptive – USD’s a good football team.  97621   :38   “that’s the question”.
   Stiegelmeier says the Jacks have to be ready for anything to be thrown their way – kitchen sink included.  97622   :29   “on special teams”.
   You’ll hear the game on the Ranch 910AM starting at 1:00pm.

SDSU WRESTLING…Nationally-ranked powers North Carolina and Nebraska, as well as South Dakota State, meet Sunday in the Nebraska wrestling triangular in Lincoln.
   SDSU head coach Chris Bono talked about the competition:  97623   :26   “on the road”.
   Bono says the Jacks need tough competition to build their team R-P-I, and to prove to wrestlers they can compete at that level.  97624   :27   “where we land”.
   SDSU begins Western Wrestling Conference action after the first of the year – Bono says Wyoming’s the pre-season favorite.
