Taylor Braun scored 23 points and grabbed nine rebounds, and North Dakota State opened the second half with a 12-0 run en route to a 69-57 victory over Morehead State.  Angelo Warner led Morehead State with 14 points.
Rotnei Clarke and Kellen Dunham scored 17 points apiece, and Butler took control early in an 87-55 victory over crosstown rival IUPUI. Donovan Gibbs and Mitchell Patton led the Jaguars with 10 points each.

WOMEN’S BB…Victoria Lipscomb scored 11 points to lead Oakland in a 75-43 loss to Michigan State. The crowd of 2,635 was a record for attendance at a Golden Grizzlies women's game.
Behind a combined 55 points from its top three scorers, including a season-high 25 points from Kerah Nelson, IUPUI held off Western Michigan 75-67.
Saule Kontautaite scored 17 of her team season-high 25 points in the second half, including three key 3-pointers that put Western Illinois ahead for good, in a 65-61 road win at Loyola.

BHS BB…Brookings will open the boys’ basketball schedule Friday night at Bob Jostad Gym against Aberdeen Central.
Head coach Travis Engebretson will carry a ten-player varsity roster to start.  He’ll lean on seniors Kaleb Vig, Zach Page and Tyler Nagy for scoring, defense and leadership.  97624   :43   “energy for us”.
Even with all the new faces, the Bobcats won’t sneak up on anyone.  Engebretson says he’d like to open up the offense.  97625   :25   “throughout the season”.
Aberdeen Central went 6-15 last year, but several players return.  97626   :21   “at last year”.
Saturday, the Bobcats are at Huron.  You’ll hear both games on KCountry 102.

SUMMIT CUP…At the conclusion of the 2012-13 fall season, Oakland has taken the early lead in the race for The Summit League Commissioner’s Cup with 32.5 points. The Golden Grizzlies also hold the top spot for both the Dr. Helen Smiley Women’s All-Sports Award and the Dr. William Steinbrecher Men’s All-Sports Award.
Following Oakland, a mere 5.5 points separate the second through eighth slots, making for a closely contested race. South Dakota State is in second place with 24 points, followed by Fort Wayne (23.5), North Dakota State (22), IUPUI (21), South Dakota (20), Kansas City (19) and Western Illinois (18.5). League newcomer Omaha rounds out the poll with a total of 11.5 points.
Oakland sits atop the overall and women’s standings after placing in the top-four in all five fall sports, including capturing regular season titles in both men’s and women’s soccer. The Golden Grizzlies finished in a tie for third in volleyball and placed fourth in men’s and women’s cross country.

WAC ADDS WINDY CITY…The ever-changing Western Athletic Conference is adding Chicago State University next July, meaning the league will keep its automatic qualifying berths for the NCAA men's and women's basketball tournaments for another year.
Chicago State joins Cal State-Bakersfield, Grand Canyon, Idaho, New Mexico State, Seattle and Utah Valley in the WAC, which is losing the University of Denver to the Summit League next year.
Leagues need seven schools to maintain their AQ status for NCAA basketball tournaments, but because Grand Canyon is in the process of moving up to Division I, it is ineligible for NCAA postseason bids next year.
The WAC has a two-year grace period in which it can have six Division I schools, however, so it maintains its AQ status for 2013-14 with the addition of the Cougars.

NCAA STIPEND…NCAA President Mark Emmert is still determined to provide college athletes with $2,000 for expenses not covered by scholarships.
Convincing schools to go along with that might be as much about changing perceptions as changing the proposal.
In a surprise move last January, the Division I Board of Directors delayed implementing the stipends in the face of criticism from many colleges. The plan is still on hold, with a working group creating options that address the membership's concerns. But Emmert reiterated Wednesday his commitment to putting it into effect.
Still, the proposals can be tweaked only so much. The biggest key to implementing the stipends may be changing schools' mindsets.
That can include public pressure. Emmert chides athletic programs that make major decisions in attempts to generate more revenue, then complain they can't afford a stipend.

DUNGY AWARD…Former NFL coach Tony Dungy has been selected as this year's NCAA Roosevelt Award winner.
The award, named after President Theodore Roosevelt, is the NCAA's highest honor and is presented each year to a person who used their college athletic experience to produce a distinguished career. Dungy will receive the award Jan. 18 at the NCAA's annual convention in Grapevine, Texas.
Dungy is second on Tampa Bay's career victory list (57) and is the all-time leader in Colts history (91), becoming the first black coach to hoist the Lombardi Trophy when Indy won the Super Bowl after the 2006 season.
In addition to football, Dungy has written several books, worked with inmates, adopted children and used the Dungy Family Foundation to help improve communities.

TESH-ARMSTRONG…The International Olympic Committeee has postponed a decision on stripping Olympic bronze medal from Lance Armstrong.
Armstrong has been accused of using illegal drugs during the Tour De France bicycle race.  Earlier this year, Armstrong abandoned his fight against the charges.
A former network sportscaster, John Tesh, called the Tour De France for CBS.  He says Armstrong’s “Livestrong” foundation owns the rights to one of his songs – and says he was shocked by the allegations.  97627   :31   “happened with Lance”.
Tesch says the average American sports fan probably won’t recognize any names currently involved in cycling.  97628   :13   “just not true”.
Tesh appeared on the “Sports Show” on the Ranch 910AM.  He’s currently a composer and performer, and will bring his holiday show to the SDSU Performing Arts Center Monday night.
