AUGIE FB COACH… Jerry Olszewski (oh-SHEH-skee) is the new head football coach of Augustana College.
Olszewski is a 19-year coaching veteran who previously served as head coach for St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn. He compiled a record of 32-18 in five seasons at St. Olaf, leading all five teams to records of .500 or better.
Before St. Olaf, Olszewski spent two seasons as the defensive coordinator at his alma mater, Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
Olszewski says faith, family and football will be the cornerstone of the Augustana program, and he's looking forward to meeting the alumni and engaging in the Sioux Falls community.
Director of Athletics Bill Gross made the announcement during a news conference Wednesday.
Olszewski is the 21st head football coach in the program's history.
NDSU FB…For the second straight week, defending FCS champion North Dakota State is preparing for a team that runs the ball almost all the time.
The Bison face Georgia Southern in Friday night's Football Championship Subdivision semifinal at the Fargodome, with the winner advancing to the title game in Frisco, Texas.
Georgia Southern leads the country in rushing by averaging 409 yards per game. The Eagles have not thrown the ball more than 10 times in a single game.
Bison linebacker Grant Olson set a school record with 29 tackles in last week's win over run-happy Wofford. He says he enjoys playing against an option team, but it takes a group effort to stop it.
The game is a repeat of last year's semifinal in which the Bison defeated the Eagles 35-7 at the Fargodome.
NCAA VB…Oregon, Texas and Michigan know it will take a near-perfect effort to knock off top-seeded Penn State at this weekend's NCAA volleyball championships. Still, no one is handing the Nittany Lions the title. Michigan and Texas have lost matches to Penn State this year, but all three challengers are confident they can win it all.
Third-seeded Texas (27-4) will face unseeded Michigan (27-11) in Thursday night's first semifinal, with No. 5 Oregon (29-4) facing Penn State (33-2) in the other. Michigan and Oregon are making their first Final Four appearances; Texas is making its fourth in five years.
Penn State doesn't have many flaws and is seeking its fifth national title in six years. The Nittany Lions have won 36 of 39 sets since losing to Nebraska on Oct. 28.
