TOP 25 POLLS…Duke is back in a familiar place — No. 1
The Blue Devils advanced one spot to replace Indiana at the top of The Associated Press' Top 25 on Monday, drawing closer to UCLA's record for most No. 1 rankings.
Indiana (9-1) held the top spot from the preseason poll through the first five weeks of the season. Butler beat the Hoosiers 88-86 in overtime Saturday. The Blue Devils (9-0), who were off last week, received 62 first-place votes from the 65-member national media panel.
This is the 123rd week Duke has been No. 1, 11 weeks behind UCLA.
Michigan (11-0), which received the other No. 1 votes, and Syracuse moved up one place each to second and third. They were followed in the top 10 by Arizona, Louisville, Indiana, Ohio State, Florida, Kansas and Illinois.
-DASH-
Stanford remains No. 1 in The Associated Press women's basketball poll for the fifth straight week.
The Cardinal had 22 first-place votes Monday, while Connecticut received 16. Baylor got the other two. It was a lightly scheduled week with most schools finishing up exams. The Cardinal had only one game, routing Pacific. Stanford will head across the country to play No. 21 South Carolina and 10th-ranked Tennessee this week.
UConn, Baylor, Duke and Notre Dame rounded out the first five.
The Irish are followed by Georgia, Kentucky, California and Maryland. Louisville fell six spots to No. 14 after losing at Colorado. The win vaulted the unbeaten Buffaloes into the poll at No. 25. It's their first ranking since Jan. 14, 2008. Florida State also re-entered the Top 25 at No. 23.
P’S-O-W…The Summit League named Tony Fiegen its player of the week, while College Sports Madness tabbed Jordan Dykstra for its weekly league honor.
Fiegen earned his first career award after a double-double performance that led the Jackrabbits past Montana and snapped the Grizzlies’ 15-game home court win streak, the eighth-longest in NCAA Division I. His two decisive free throws with 8.9 seconds remaining in the second overtime propelled SDSU to the 68-67 victory. Fiegen scored 13 points and pulled down a career-high 13 rebounds, including six on the offensive end, while playing a career-high 43 minutes. He converted five-of-nine field goal attempts and all three free throws while adding one steal.
Dykstra got the nod from College Sports Madness as its Summit League Men’s Basketball Player of the Week after he led the Jacks with 16 points in the win at Montana, adding 10 rebounds for his fourth career double-double. Dykstra also tied a career-high with three steals and tied a season-high with three assists in the win.
GIRLS HOCKEY…The Brookings girls’ varsity hockey team had an 8-2 win over Watertown on Friday night.
Hallie Theodosopoulos and Sierra Winter each had two goals in the win. Jessie Laidlaw, Jade Chasing Hawk, Shelby Meyer and DeAnna Robinson also scored. Winter had two assists, with Ashley Rennich, Maddie Zerse and Laidlaw each recording one.
OUTDOOR GRANTS…Applications are now being accepted for projects paid for from the Tony and Dar Dean Outdoor Education Fund. Working in coordination with the South Dakota Parks and Wildlife Foundation, a restricted account has been established for the purpose of accepting donations for the fund’s operations.
The small grants program is intended to provide resources, ideas and other support to people and organizations desiring to provide quality educational outdoor experiences for youth. These small grants are eligible to be used in a variety of ways, including but not limited to:
· Funding travel for students or groups to educational opportunities or events
· Providing supplies and materials to promote outdoor knowledge and skills
· Paying instructors and teachers who lead/organize conservation education events
· Create new activities and events that increase outdoor knowledge and participation among South Dakota families and youth
· Supporting the curriculum and volunteers at the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks Outdoor Campus facilities in Sioux Falls and Rapid City that are applicable to outdoor education events for youth and families.
Grant proposals will be accepted from January first through March 15th. In 2013, a total of $4,000 is available for applicants to apply to activities and projects that must be completed in 2013 or in 2014.
CAL-DAVIS COACH…Former California running game coordinator Ron Gould has been hired as the new head coach at UC Davis.
Athletic director Terry Tumey announced Monday that Gould would replace Bob Biggs, who retired after the 2012 season.
The 47-year-old Gould called it a "dream come true" to coach the Aggies.
Gould was a highly respected assistant on former Cal coach Jeff Tedford's staff. He helped develop nine 1,000-yard rushers during his final 11 seasons with the Golden Bears. Six of the program's top 10 all-time rushers played under Gould, including NFL players Marshawn Lynch, Jahvid Best and Shane Vereen.
Gould has also coached at Oregon, Portland State and Boise State.
Gould will be paid an annual base salary of $235,000.
BIG TEN BOWLS…The Big Ten spent much of the year as a national punch line.
It might get worse during bowl season.
The Big Ten could only fill seven of its eight predetermined bowl slots — and each of those bowl-bound teams is currently an underdog.
From the five-loss Wisconsin team that still wound up in the Rose Bowl to the 6-6 Purdue squad that fired its coach, the beleaguered Big Ten isn't expected to do much of anything in the postseason.
The league went just 1-6 in bowl games in 2008. According to odds makers, things could go even worse in 2012.
