ENTRINGER CLASSIC…This year’s Michael Entringer Scholarship Basketball Classic will mark a huge milestone for the event.
The event is expected to top the 500-thousand dollar mark in total scholarship money given away. Classic organizer Pete
Entringer says he’s awestruck by how much the classic has grown over the past nineteen years. 97621 :24 “on both gyms”.
The classic is sponsored by the Region 2 officials, who donate not only their time to officiate the games, but to also help run the event in other areas. Entringer says volunteers have been crucial to the classic’s success. 97622 :35 “a good cause”.
The girls’ classic took place earlier this month in Flandreau, and the boys’ classic is Saturday at Brookings High School. Several fundraisers during the day, and several men and women will enter the Entringer Classic Hall of Fame. Lorin Larsen of Madison - one of this year’s inductees – will be inducted posthumously. 97623 :21 “Hall of Fame”.
The four games in the BHS Auxiliary Gym can be heard on B93.7 FM. The four games in Bob Jostad Gym will be on KCountry 102.
MORE WOLTERS HONORS… In addition to earning Summit League and CollegeSportsMadness.com Player of the Week honors after leading South Dakota State to its first-ever win over a ranked opponent, Jackrabbit senior Nate Wolters can add a couple more honors.
He can also add Lute Olson Award Player of the Week honors after leading the Jackrabbits to a 70-65 win over No. 16, and previously undefeated, New Mexico on Saturday at The Pit in Albuquerque, N.M., with 28 points and seven assists.
The three honors all come on the heals of Wolters being named a candidate for the 2013 Bob Cousy Collegiate Point Guard of the Year Award on Dec. 20, while in the midst of a two-day, 18 hour, 1,200 mile bus ride from Nashville, Tenn., to Albuquerque to play the Lobos.
The annual honor, named for Hall of Famer and former Boston Celtic Bob Cousy, recognizes the top point guards in men’s college basketball. Over 80 candidates garnered a nomination for the 2013 Bob Cousy Award.
Wolters earned the award after posting 21.2 points, 5.9 assists and 5.1 rebounds per game as a junior in 2011-12 in leading the Jackrabbits to their first-ever NCAA Tournament at the Division I level and tying the school record for wins with 27. He also set the SDSU junior scoring record and earned Associated Press All-American honors.
ICE FISHING… With winter weather finally here, area anglers are looking to hit area lakes for ice fishing.
Lake County conservation officer Cody Symens (SIMMONS) says because of the dry summer, the best fishing of the year will be early in the winter. 97624 :29 “advantage of it”.
With a later onset of cold weather, it’s a good idea to check the ice depth before you bring a shed or a vehicle onto the frozen water. Symens says the thicker the ice, the better. 97625 :22 “ice fishing year”.
A complete list of fishing regulations can be found in the 2013 Fishing Guide and also on the State Game, Fish and Parks’ website.
