SUMMIT POW… Oakland guard Duke Mondy and Western Illinois forward Terell Parks were named Summit League Men's Basketball Players of the Week.
   Mondy averaged 14.5 points, 5.5 assists, 4.0 steals and 3.0 rebounds for the week. He shot over 50 percent from the field (.526) and three-point range (.571) during the week.  Parks averaged 11.0 points, 10.0 rebounds, 6.0 blocked shots, 2.0 assists and 1.5 steals per game while leading WIU to its best start (12-3) since the 1957-58 season.

RANGERS… Brookings received goals from eight different players as it handed Aberdeen a 12-0 boys’ hockey setback on the final day of the Junior Gold Tournament Sunday.
   The Rangers tallied four goals in the opening period, two each for Garrett Gerstner and Corey Roach, with Trevor Puetz notching a pair of assists. Brookings didn’t let up in the second as five different players logged goals, including the third for    Gerstner, who also had three assists in the contest.
   Carter Roach scored two of the Rangers’ three goals in the final period. T.J. Theodosopoulos finished with three assists, and Puetz, Jon Lehman and Sam Schutt had two each.

SDSU FB…The South Dakota State University closed the 2012 campaign with its highest ranking of the season, finishing 14th in the final Football Championship Subdivision media poll conducted by The Sports Network.
   The Jackrabbits, who ended the season with a 9-4 overall record, made their second FCS playoff appearance in four years. SDSU notched its first-ever playoff victory, defeating Eastern Illinois, 58-10, on Nov. 24. Two of the Jackrabbits' losses came to eventual national champion North Dakota State, which finished first in the poll, followed by runner-up Sam Houston State (Texas).
   SDSU spent eight weeks in the Sports Network poll leading up to the playoffs, hitting its high-water mark of 16h following a 16-12 road win at Southern Illinois on Nov. 3.

   Zach Zenner officially claimed the FCS rushing title with 2,044 yards and an average of 157.23 yards per game, edging Wofford (S.C.) senior Eric Breitenstein with 2,035 yards and 156.54 yards per contest. Zenner also finished seventh in all-purpose yards with an average of 172.38 yards per game.
   Two other Jackrabbit players posted top-10 individual rankings. Senior linebacker Ross Shafrath finished seventh in tackles with an average of 11.54 per game, while sophomore kicker Justin Syrovatka ranked eighth in field goals with an average of 1.38 made per game.
   As a team, SDSU ranked in the top 10 of three different defensive categories: fourth in pass efficiency defense (100.33), fifth in scoring defense (16.38 points per game) and eighth in total defense (305.31 yards per game).

WILDLIFE GRANTS…The South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks Wildlife Diversity Program is now accepting proposals for the Wildlife Diversity Small Grants Program.
   The program provides funding for researchers, educators and naturalists for projects focused on native wildlife. Funding for the 2013 Small Grants Program totals $35,000 for education and outreach related to native wildlife species and their habitats.
   A wide range of projects have been completed since 1997, ranging from creation of a field guide to the tiger beetles of South Dakota to evaluating the nesting ecology of raptors in the Black Hills.  The diverse projects that have been completed in the last 16 years have resulted in numerous publications in scientific journals, popular educational products, and a tremendous amount of new information on native wildlife species and their habitats.
   Grant proposals are due by Feb. 15, 2013.
