BHS GBB…Top-ranked Sioux Falls Washington broke away in the second quarter and went on to a 50-29 win over Brookings Tuesday night in non-conference girls’ basketball.
   Michaela Mayer led the 9-0 Warriors with ten points.  Sydney Arrington added nine and Ellie Benson eight points.  Amelia Miller led Brookings with ten points, with Emily Johnson chipping in six.
   Bobcat head coach Lynn Frederick was ecstatic with some of his team’s play.  97629   :27   “that’s their strength”.
   Brookings had 17 turnovers – Frederick says some of those were unforced.  97630   :24   “come into play”.
   Brookings hosts Aberdeen Central Friday night.
   The freshman team lost to Washington by four – the Warrior sophomores scored the first 11 points of the game and won by over 20.

RANGERS RECAP… The Brookings Ranger Bantam A Team took their undefeated record on the road to compete in the I-94 Classic in Sauk Centre, Minnesota this past weekend. The Rangers would go on to win all three games and come home with the championship.  They defeated Spring Lake Park 11-1…defeated Chisholm 5-1…and got by Grand Forks 5-4.
   The Brookings Rangers Bantam B team traveled to Owatonna for the Owatonna Bantam C Tournament.  Brookings lost to White Bear Lake 6-3…fell to Moundsview 3-2…but came back to defeat Woodbury 6-3.
   The Pee Wee 1 team was 0-4 this past weekend hosting exhibition games at Larson Ice Center. Friday night, Brookings fell 7-3 to the Rushmore Thunder…Sioux Center got by Brookings 3-1…Pierre defeated Brookings 11-9…and the Rushmores came back for a 8-3 win.
   The Pee Wee 2 team beat Watertown 5-3 and 8-0, then scored a 4-3 win over Sioux Falls in a pick-up game.
   The Squirt 2 team split a double-header against the Sioux Falls Flyers losing 9-3 in the first game and winning 6-2 in the second.
   The Girls U12 team lost to Lake of the Woods 11-0…fell to South Winnipeg 1-0…defeated Watertown 4-0 and lost to Southdale 4-0.  All the games were in a tournament at Fargo.

ABERDEEN HOCKEY… The Aberdeen Hockey Association has made some changes in its boys’ varsity program.
   Steve Salwei is still coach-in-chief within the organization, but is no longer the head coach of the boys’ team. Assistant Jon Murdy has been promoted to head coach.
   The Aberdeen Hockey Association and the varsity coaching staff mutually decided that the program needed to move in a different direction. The promotion of Murdy to head coach was made effective on Jan. 3.

NSIC TOURNEYS… The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference will hold its men’s and women’s basketball tournaments at a new Sioux Falls complex beginning in 2014.
   Commissioner Butch Raymond announced a three-year agreement to move the NSIC/Sanford Health Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournaments to the Pentagon by Sanford Health.

NSSA AWARDS… Cousins Tyler Merriam of Brookings and Roger Merriam of Watertown have been honored by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association.
   Tyler is the South Dakota sportscaster of the year and Roger is the state sportswriter of the year. Tyler is coordinator of broadcast services at South Dakota State University and the voice of the Jackrabbits and Roger is the sports editor of the Watertown Public Opinion.
