DeHAVEN…Brookings junior Addison DeHaven has been named South Dakota’s Gatorade Boys’ Cross Country Runner of the Year – the first BHS runner to earn the honor.
DeHaven won the Class “AA” individual title last fall, leading the Bobcats to a third-place finish in the meet.  He placed tenth at the Nike Cross Nationals Heartland Regional meet, and 23rd at the Foot Locker Midwest Regional Championships.
Brookings head cross country and track coach Chris Gruenhagen says it’s exciting news.  97636   :20   “of that list”.
Other award winners include Josh Heitkamp of Sioux Falls Washington, and two time winner Tony Smoragiewicsz of Rapid City Central.
Gruenhagen says DeHaven’s work ethic is incredible.  97637   :27   “winner next year”.
Gruenhagen says DeHaven could have a crazy senior season.  97638   :25   “year…next year”.
DeHaven’s father, Rod, is the track and cross country coach at South Dakota State – Gruenhagen says Addison’s skills may go beyond that level.  97639   :28   “somewhere real big”.
He also has a 3.46 grade average in the classroom.

FLATTEN NOMINATED…The list of 814 prep seniors who have been nominated to play in the 2013 McDonald’s All American Games includes Clark/Willow Lake’s Skyler Flatten - the second consecutive year he’s been nominated. Flatten is one of two players nominated from South Dakota. Jolonna Sazue of Pine Ridge High School also received a nomination.
The final roster of 24 boys and 24 girls who will be selected to play in the 2013 Games will be announced during the McDonald’s All American Games Selection Show on ESPNU on February 14.
The 36th Annual Boys Game will tip-off on Wednesday, April 3 at 8:30 p.m. CT from Chicago’s United Center and will be broadcast on ESPN. The 12th Annual Girls Game will precede the Boys Game, beginning at 6 p.m. CT and will broadcast live on ESPNU.

PELLINI…Nebraska football coach Bo Pelini has received a strong endorsement from new athletic director Shawn Eichorst (IKE-horst).
Eichorst said in an interview with The Associated Press that he admires how Pelini runs the Cornhuskers' program and that he believes Pelini is on track to end a conference-championship drought that dates to 1999.
The Huskers were 10-4 this past season, finishing with a 31-point loss to Wisconsin in the Big Ten championship game and a 14-point loss to Georgia in the Capital One Bowl.
Eichorst said even though the season ended in disappointment, the Huskers are "not far away" from a Big Ten title.
Eichorst called Pelini "an excellent coach, character-based, fundamentally sound." Eichorst said he's impressed with the discipline and academic achievement of the players.
