Against Western Illlinois, Wolters led all scorers with 22 points while adding six assists, five rebounds and three steals to hand WIU its first league loss and snap an 11-game win streak. Wolters’ 22 points were the most scored by a Summit League player this season against the Leathernecks, who entered the game with the nation’s No. 4 scoring defense (52.2 ppg), while his three steals accounted for half of the WIU turnovers.
Two nights later, Wolters scored 12 points, dished out seven assists against just one turnover, and pulled down six rebounds at IUPUI. He also added two steals and a blocked shot against the Jaguars.
Wolters averaged 17.0 points, 6.5 assists and 5.5 rebounds for the week and surpassed the 2,000 career points mark.

FERDINAND OUT…Paul Ferdinand has been a football coach at Rapid City Stevens for more than 20 years, the last five a head coach.
His resignation, effective Jan. 4, was accepted by the Rapid City Area Schools Board of Education last week.  Ferdinand says his decision came down to the desire to spend more time with his family.
Ferdinand attended junior college in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. After earning his undergraduate degree at Huron College, he began his coaching career at Oelrichs, Tripp-Delmont and Montrose before coming to Stevens in 1990.
He served various roles as an assistant football coach at Stevens before taking over as head coach in 2008. He plans to remain at the school and continue teaching social sciences.  He amassed a 16-35 record in five years, bookended with a 1-9 mark in 2008 and a 0-9 result in 2012.

DEUEL FB…The Deuel football program is one of four 11-man schools that will move to nine-man play, starting this fall.
Athletic director Chad Schiernbeck says the decision was made after evaluating current, and future, enrollment projections.  97627   :21   “borderline, or below”.
Schiernbeck says enough students participate to where Deuel could play eleven-man, but says those numbers have also been slipping.  He says the recent Activities Association reclassification of schools didn’t really play into the decision.
Schiernbeck says the key for Deuel was conference affiliation – adminstrators didn’t want to travel great distances to play independent schools.  97628   :23   “they honor that”.
Schiernbeck says there hasn’t been much negative feedback from district patrons.  97629   :24   “have been favorable”.
Webster, Platte-Geddes and Hill City are other eleven-man programs dropping to nine-man.
