SDSU MBB…Nate Wolters scored 26 points and grabbed seven rebounds, helping South Dakota State rally past North Dakota State in the second half Saturday for a 69-53 victory.
   Wolters, who became the first SDSU player to score 2,000 career points in a 59-53 win at Western Illinois on Thursday, was 7 of 16 from the floor, including three 3-pointers. Tony Fiegen and Jordan Dykstra added 14 points apiece for the Jackrabbits (16-6, 7-2 Summit League), and Dykstra now is six points shy of 1,000 for his career.
   TrayVonn Wright had 16 points and Marshall Bjorklund pulled down 13 rebounds for the Bison (16-5, 7-2), who lost their second in a row following an eight-game winning streak.
   NDSU led 37-31 at halftime but went cold in the second half, shooting 25 percent from the floor as SDSU outscored the Bison 38-16. The Jackrabbits shot 57 percent in the second half.

SDSU WBB…Four South Dakota State players scored in double figures, leading the Jackrabbit women's basketball team to a 74-64 victory over Omaha to close out the first half of the Summit League schedule.
   The league-leading Jackrabbits improved to 7-1 in The Summit League and 15-6 overall.
   Megan Waytashek led the way with 11 points, while Gabby Boever, Hannah Strop and Katie Lingle all tallied 10 points. Lingle also paced the Jackrabbits on the boards with seven rebounds to share game-high honors. The balanced SDSU offensive attack also featured nine points from Ashley Eide and Rachel Walters.
   Rebounds were even at 29.
   SDSU finished the day with its best overall shooting percentage of the season, going 27-of-52 for 51.9 percent. The Jackrabbits made 8-of-20 three-point attempts and were 12-of-16 at the free throw line, 75 percent.
   Omaha received 17 points each from Jamie Nash and Carolyn Blair-Mobley, with Blair-Mobley also grabbing seven rebounds. Paige Frauendorfer contributed 16 points and six rebounds.

BHS BBB…Caleb Vig’s three-pointer at the buzzer capped a furious Brookings rally as the Bobcats edged Rapid City Stevens 54-51 Saturday in Rapid City.
   The Cobblers led by ten midway through the fourth quarter behind the shooting of guard John Fierro, who finished with 20 points.  Ian Barse had 13 for Central.
   Tyler Nagy led the 10-3 Bobcats with 17 points.  Braxton Carlson added 15 points and 18 rebounds for the Bobcats, who have won six games by either scoring, or making a defensive stop, in the final five seconds.

BHS GBB…Rapid City Central’s 18-0 first-half run lifted the Cobblers to a 46-34 win over Brookings Saturday afternoon in non-conference girls basketball in Rapid City.
   The teams were tied at five in the first quarter – it was 23-5 before the Bobcats could get their next basket.
   Taylor Bauer led the 7-5 Cobblers with 12 points.  Grace Weeks came off the bench to score ten.
   Brookings was led by Emily Johnson’s ten points.  Amelia Miller had eight points and Lauren Coughlin seven.
   Brookings hosts Sioux Falls Roosevelt Friday night.

KOCER TO JACKS…South Dakota State and the wrestling coaching staff announced the addition of Alex Kocer to the Jackrabbit wrestling team.
   Kocer is a South Dakota five-time state champion from Wagner.  He won the 152-pound Class B state title as a senior in 2012 en route to an undefeated season (44-0). He first climbed the championship ladder in 2008 at 103 pounds and won three titles between his first and last (2009 at 118 pounds, 2010 at 130 and 2011 at 152).
   Kocer finished his career as one of three five-time state champions, one title behind Kirk Wallman and Logan Storley for most in a prep career.

COACH AWARDS…The National High School Athletic Coaches Association has named the 2013 NHSACA Coach of the Year finalists from South Dakota. To be considered for this award a nominee has been determined to have outstanding coaching longevity and win-loss record, championship years, awards received and service to the coaching profession and to the athletes of the State of South Dakota.
   Finalists will be honored at the national awards banquet to be held at the NHSACA 48th Annual Conference in Des Moines, Iowa on June 26th. This annual event is attended by athletic directors and coaches in 18 sports from throughout the United States.
   The 2013 Coach of the Year finalists from South Dakota are: Tom Culver, Avon High School in the sport of football; Gary Munsen, Mitchell High School in the sport of boys basketball; Linda DeBoer, Miller High School in the sport of volleyball; John Nyhaug, Viborg-Hurley High School in the sport of boys track & field; Craig Black, Custer High School in the sport of girls track & field; Tom McGough, Miller High School in the sport of boys track & field; Vicky Fisher, Watertown High School in the sport of gymnastics; Bob Billotto, Eureka High School assistant in boys’ sports; Carmen Robinson, Yankton High School assistant in girls’ sports; and Gene Brownell, Aberdeen Central High School Athletic Director.
   Galen Busch of Mission and Virg Polak of Watertown will be inducted into the NHSACA Hall of Fame June 25.

BLIZZARD…Brookings jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but needed a goal with just 52 seconds remaining in the third period from Tyler Cayemberg to secure a 5-4 win and weekend road sweep of Coulee Region. Cayemberg’s game-winning goal completed a hat-trick for the forward. Jared Docken and Aidan Cavallini had the other goals for Brookings, which helped build an early lead. Adam Lovick scored twice for Coulee Region, who also got goals from Garrett Hendrickson and Eddie Matsushima.

   Eric Brenk scored twice and goaltender Drew Weigman made 29 saves as the Blizzard topped the Chill 3-1 on Friday. Evan Hesse gave Brookings a 1-0 lead in the first period and Brenk scored his first of two to make it 2-0 at the 1st intermission. Kevin Becker scored the lone Chill goal in the second period to make it 2-1, but a late goal in the third period from Brenk ultimately gave the Blizzard the 3-1 margin of victory.
