SDSU MBB…Nate Wolters scored 19 points and South Dakota State led most of the way en route to a 67-54 victory over rival South Dakota on Thursday night.
South Dakota State also got a noteworthy performance from Jordan Dykstra. He had a double-double -- 18 points and 14 rebounds -- and became the 43rd member of the school's 1,000-point club.  97635   :08   “lot to me”.
Tony Fiegen and Chad White each chipped in with 11 points.
Things looked bleak for South Dakota (8-14, 4-6) most of the night. The team had just one double-digit scorer -- Casey Kasperbauer's 15 points -- and converted just 5 of 10 free-throw attempts for the game.
SDSU head coach Scott Nagy says the Jacks were never totally able to pull away.  97636   :33   “and did it”.
Nagy says the Jacks have to refocus for Saturday’s Pork Classic game against Missouri-Kansas City.  97637   :23   “prepare for them”.
   Saturday’s tip-off is at 4:00 – you’ll hear the game on the Ranch AM910 starting at 3:30.

BHS BBB…Brookings makes the return trip to Brandon Friday night to face the Lynx in ESD Conference boys’ basketball – game time is 7:30pm, and you’ll hear it on KBRK 1430.
Tyler Nagy hit a jumper at the buzzer to give the Bobcats a 42-39 win in the first meeting – Bobcat head coach Travis Engebretson says Brandon can score points, and can play defense when they need.  97629   :25   “job of communicating”.
Brookings didn’t practice Thursday due to the school closing – Engebretson says a day off may be good for the team’s mental outlook.

REGION GYMNASTICS…The “A” regional gymnastics meet will be held Saturday in Huron – the event doubles as the ESD Conference meet.
The top teams, and individuals, advance to the state meet in Rapid City.
Brookings coach Rachelle Engbrecht says Watertown’s been strong for years, and is favored again.  97630   :17   “are really good”.
Engbrecht says the Bobcats are in a dogfight for third.  97631   :12   “ready for conference”.
The Sioux Falls and Rapid City schools make up the other region – Engbrecht says the Rapid City schools are favored there.

BLIZZARD…Austin makes its final regular season trip to Brookings Friday night for NAHL Central Division hockey – opening faceoff for “Mascot Night” is 7:05.
Austin clinched a playoff spot last weekend – Brookings coach Cory Laylin says that’s well deserved.  97632   :09   “it’s well earned”.
The number two team in the division gets home ice for an opening-round best-of-five.  Bismarck, Brookings and Minot are battling for that berth.

RANGER GIRLS…The Brookings varsity girls hockey team’s finally getting healthy – in time for the stretch run for the state tournament.
As many as five players have missed action due to concussions, plus other injuries.  Goaltender Devyn Prodoehl says it’ll help to get players back into the lineup, and into their regular positions.  97633   :19   “more consistent throughout”.
Lexi Koenig says some fans were concerned with how the team’s been playing – but says no one on the squad panicked.  97634   :17   “into any game”.
Brookings currently leads the state standings, which determine seeding for the state tourney in Huron.

SDSU TRACK…The South Dakota State track and field teams are on the road again this weekend - at Nebraska and North Dakota for separate meets. Nebraska is hosting the Husker Invite; North Dakota State is hosting the Thundering Herd Classic.
The Husker Invite will feature Arkansas (men are ranked number one overall), Auburn (men are ranked number nine overall), Minnesota (men are ranked number seven overall), Texas A&M (women are ranked sixth overall) and the University of Central Florida (women are ranked ninth overall).
At Fargo, the University of Mary, North Dakota and North Dakota State will compete against South Dakota State. The women's pentathlon, men's heptathlon and both men's and women's weight throws will take place Friday afternoon. On Saturday the 60-meter dash hurdles will be the first event of the day. The running events will start at 10:30 a.m. The field events will start at 11:15 a.m.

USD BUILDING…The University of South Dakota received final approval Thursday to pursue the construction phase of a proposed sports performance facility arena and outdoor track/soccer complex in Vermillion.
Senate Bill 8 — which would authorize the South Dakota Building Authority and Board of Regents (BOR) to “finance and “construct” — was approved 8-0.
According to the bill, introduced at the request of the BOR, the South Dakota Building Authority may finance up to $22.7 million of the construction through revenue bonds.  According to USD officials, as of last week, approximately $10 million is left to be raised to reach the $48.2 million price tag for the two projects — funded separately.
The next step will be eventually breaking ground in Vermillion. USD interim athletic directory David Herbster said last week that he believes a shovel could be in the dirt by the end of the year, given pledges continue to come in.
The construction of the two facility projects would mark the biggest such athletic endeavor at USD since the DakotaDome opened in 1979 (and later required a new steel roof in 2001).
