SDSU MBB…Nate Wolters scored a school-record 53 points and broke another mark with nine 3-pointers as South Dakota State defeated IPFW 80-74 Thursday night.
Wolters' point total is the highest this season by a Division I player, bettering a 47-point performance by Oakland's Travis Bader on Jan. 24 against IUPUI. He broke Dave Thomas' school record of 44 points and Randy Suarez's mark of eight 3-pointers.
The 53-point performance is the third-highest in Summit League history, trailing only North Dakota State's Ben Woodside (60 vs. Stephen F. Austin, Dec. 12, 2008) and Kansas City's Michael Watson (54 vs. Oral Roberts, Feb. 22, 2003).
Frank Gaines led IPFW (10-15, 3-8) with 29 points, and Luis Jacobo had 14. The Mastadons lost despite hitting 9 of 20 3-point attempts and outrebounding the Jackrabbits 37-29.
SDSU WBB…Katie Lingle scored a career-high 18 points to lead South Dakota State to a 72-62 win over Fort Wayne Thursday night. Lingle tied a season high with nine rebounds as the Jackrabbits held a 44-31 advantage on the boards. Gabrielle Boever finished the night with 13 points, while Ashley Eide scored all 11 of her points in the second half, to go along with seven rebounds, six assists, two blocked shots and a pair of steals.
The Jackrabbits held a 33-3 advantage in bench points.

Wolters was also named finalist for both the Bob Cousy and John Wooden Awards on Jan. 10.
Spenner set the school record and top league mark with a score of 4,104 in the pentathlon. If eligible, her mark would rank fifth in the country and currently ranks 23rd in the world.
FB RECRUITING…South Dakota State has signed 18 high school players to national letters of intent – head coach John Stiegelmeier says there’s room for another defensive lineman, if a good one’s available.
He thought the Jacks’ playoff success would hurt recruiting, but that’s not the case. 97629 :21 “fishing or whatever”.
Stiegelmeier says some using social media unscrupuously to influence recruits. 97630 :26 “honest with ‘ya”.
Stiegelmeier says the recruiting battles may become more intense – now that rules have been relaxed. 97631 :10 “let’s release it”.
Stiegelmeier appeared on the “Sports Show” on the Ranch AM910.
NCAA SOFTBALL…After years on the cusp, Patrick Murphy and Alabama finally broke through and brought the Southeastern Conference its first Women's College World Series championship last year. Now, there's a budding tradition to uphold.
Murphy kept a watchful eye as Nick Saban and his Crimson Tide won back-to-back titles, emerging as the most powerful of the SEC's mighty football teams. Before that, the women's gymnastics team also repeated as NCAA champions.
Suddenly, it seems like just one championship isn't enough at 'Bama.
Alabama figures to be in the mix again this season with ace Jackie Traina back to compete against runner-up Oklahoma, two-time national champion Arizona State, California, Tennessee and others chasing a championship.
The first games of the 2013 season are Thursday, with many teams opening up Friday.
