SUMMIT TRACK… The South Dakota men's team and North Dakota State women's team won the 2013 Summit League Indoor Track and Field titles at the DakotaDome.
The Bison won the women's title with 186 points, while Omaha (118 points) edged out South Dakota (114 points) for second by four points in its first appearance at the league championship. Kansas City took fourth with 86 points and South Dakota State finished fifth with 73 points. Oakland (43 points), Western Illinois (34 points) and Fort Wayne (nine points) rounded out the women's standings.
On the men's side, South Dakota tallied 190 points in first, as North Dakota State finished runner-up with 176.5 points and Kansas City took third with 118 points. South Dakota State was fourth with 85.333 points, while Western Illinois (64.6666 points) and Oakland (22.5 points) finished fifth and sixth.
South Dakota garnered four individual honors and North Dakota State earned three. On the women's side USD's Amber Eichkorn was tabbed the Newcomer of the Championship, while Omaha's Sami Spenner was named Field Championship MVP. The Bison were represented by Faith Kruchowski honored as the Track Championship MVP and Ryun Godfrey as Coach of the Year.
For the men, a trio of Coyotes were recognized as Chris Nielsen was named the Newcomer of the Championship, Dave Gottsleben collected Coach of the Year and Jeff Mettler garnered Track Championship MVP. NDSU's Andy Lillejord claimed Field Championship MVP.
The track events of the day began with the mile run as South Dakota State's Tera Potts finished second (5:02.89).
SDSU's LeAndre Kennedy (6.93) was second in the 60 meters.
SDSU's Trent Lusignan won the 5000-meters, clocking in a time of 14:33.60.
MELTON HONORED… South Dakota State University third baseman Andrew Melton has been selected as Summit League Player of the Week after a successful opening round of games for the Jackrabbits.
Melton hit safely in all four games of a weekend trip to Florida. He posted three hits in the Jackrabbits' 10-5 win over St. Bonaventure (N.Y.) on Feb. 23, followed by a 4-for-6 effort the next day against the Bonnies, collecting a pair of doubles, two runs scored and three runs batted in.
For the week, which included games against Waldorf (Iowa) and Ohio State, Melton batted .429 (9-for-21) with a .480 on-base percentage and .571 slugging percentage. He scored five runs, drove in four runs and tallied three doubles.
WOLTERS… The Summit League named South Dakota State point guard Nate Wolters its Player of the Week on Monday for a league-record seventh time, and tied the all-time league mark with 15 career honors
Against CSU Bakersfield on Wednesday, Wolters finished one assist shy of a triple-double, scoring 32 points, grabbing 10 rebounds and dishing out nine assists. Facing Murray State in a nationally-televised BracketBusters game, he scored 18 points with six rebounds, five assists and two steals.
Wolters played 89 of his team’s 90 minutes in the two games, including all 50 in the double-overtime contest at Bakersfield. His weekly averages included 25 points, seven assists, six rebounds and 1.5 steals per game. Wolters became the first player on record (since 1990-91) to earn three consecutive Summit League Player of the Week awards.
CollegeInsider.com announced the 25 finalists for the 2013 Lou Henson Award on Monday, a list that includes South Dakota State point guard Nate Wolters.
The Lou Henson Award is presented annually to the top Mid-Major player in Division I college basketball. The award is named in honor of Lou Henson who retired after a spectacular coaching career that lasted 41 years.
