World War II veteran receives medals

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) - An 88-year-old World War II veteran who was shot in the abdomen during a battle in Germany nearly 70 years ago has received a Purple Heart and Bronze Star.

U.S. Sen. Tim Johnson presented Charles Bledsoe with the medals Wednesday during a ceremony at the Veterans Administration hospital in Sioux Falls.

Bledsoe hadn't received the honors earlier because the wound wasn't indicated on his discharge papers. The oversight was noticed a little more than a year ago when Bledsoe applied to join the local Military Order of the Purple Heart chapter.

Bledsoe joined the Army immediately after graduating high school and served in Company F of the 273rd Infantry Regiment. He was involved in three major battles - D-Day, the Battle of the Hedgerows and the Battle of the Bulge.
