Police investigate fires, vandalism

Brookings police are investigating cases of fire-setting and 
vandalism that appear to be related.
 
Lt. Derrick Powers says four incidents were reported in an area 
around Second St. S.
 
At about 12:50 Sunday morning, there was a report of something
burning in the middle of the street on Fifth Ave. S. near Second St.  
A TV set had been set on fire and was quickly extinguished  by a
police officer. 
 
In addition, a trash bag next to a building was on fire on the 600 block 
of Second St. An officer also quickly put out that fire.  The fire
department also repsonded to both fires.
 
Someone had also attempted to set fire to the mail in a post office 
mailbox on the 800 block of Second St.  Some mail in that box was
likely damaged.
 
And, someone tipped over a Pepsi machine at Ekern Plumbing and
Heating on the 800 block of Second. It did not appear to be damaged.
