Brookings student heading to National Geographic Bee

by Perry Miller
A Brookings middle school student is heading to Washington, DC to
compete in the National Geographic Bee.
Mark Vanderzee, the son of Gary and Maria Vanderzee, won the South
Dakota Geographic Bee in Aberdeen on April 5th.  He is now one of
54 finalists to compete in the national contest.
The 14-year-old says he's been interested in geography for a couple
of years.
Vanderzee says he studies atlases before going to bed and watches
the news.
Gary Vanderzee says he is "very proud" of his son and says he
has a great memory.
The competition begins Monday and the top 10 finalists will compete in
the May 22 final round. The finals will be taped to air that evening on the
National Geographic Channel and Nat Geo WILD.
