SDSU BASEBALL…The South Dakota State University baseball team will make its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament at the Division I level, traveling this weekend to the Eugene Regional in Eugene, Ore.
   The Jackrabbits, 35-22 overall, will meet host and No. 8 national seed Oregon in first round action Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. Pacific Time (8:05 p.m. Central) at PK Park on the University of Oregon campus. Oregon enters the matchup 45-14 overall.
   The winner of the Eugene Regional will advance to Super Regional competition against the winner of the Raleigh Regional. Super Regionals will be played either June 7-9 or June 8-10.
   In the other half of the bracket, the Jackrabbits have not faced San Francisco, but have a 1-1 record all-time against Rice. Under coach Erv Huether, South Dakota State lost a 3-2 decision to Rice in 1978, but came back to record a 7-3 victory over the Owls a year later.

VOLGA-CUBBY’S…The Brookings Cubby’s scored 15 runs in their final three at-bats to defeat Volga 16-1 in seven innings Thursday, in amateur baseball action.
   Brookings had seven hits in the game, and capitalized on 14 walks issued by the Cormorants’ pitching staff.
   Matt Thomas and Andy Lee each had two hits for the Cubby’s.  Kevin Krahenbuhl drove in three runs, while Thomas and Lee picked up two each.
   Marcus Heemstra came on in relief of starter Christian Larson, and got the win – allowing one hit over three scoreless innings.
   Nate Kramer worked into the fourth inning for Volga, with Jordan Vanderbush and Brady Will pitching in relief.  Phil Podhradsky had a hit, and run scored, for Volga.

BOMBERS…The Brookings Bombers Maroon opened the season Thursday with a split against Huron. Brookings won game one 3-2 on a walk off, but lost a slugfest in game two 15-11. Brookings will play in the Watertown tourney June eighth and ninth.
   The Bombers Black opened the season with a sweep of Aberdeen in the Hub City. Game scores were 6-2 and 6-4.

BOMBERS GRAY…The Bombers Gray game scheduled for Friday, May 31 @ Salem-Montrose has been rescheduled for a later date. Practice will be held instead.

AURORA A’S… Aurora committed nine errors and allowed ten unearned runs in a 16-1, seven-inning loss to Lake Norden Wednesday night.  Jesse VanOverbeke and Matt Deknikker did the most damage at the plate for Lake Norden - VanOverbeke picked up the win allowing just one hit in four innings.
   Ty Schneider picked up two hits for the A's including a home run. Aurora drops to 0-3 and will play in the Sioux Falls tournament at Harmodon Fields this weekend. First game is at 8:00 pm on Friday and the second is 3:00 pm Saturday with Sunday to be determined.

HANSEN TO NORTHERN…Jory Hansen, the top assistant coach for the Dakota Wesleyan University women’s basketball team, has accepted the top assistant position for the Northern State University women’s basketball program.
   Hansen — who also worked as an admissions counselor and served as the admissions’ liaison to the athletic department at Dakota Wesleyan — will be the top assistant for head coach Curt Fredrickson at Northern, an NCAA Division II school.
   Hansen spent six seasons as an assistant women’s basketball coach at Dakota Wesleyan. He focused on the defensive end of the floor and called the Tigers’ defensive sets, and also played a big role in the team’s scouting, recruiting and player development. Hansen spent eight total years coaching at DWU.

ENTWISTLE… Jim Entwistle of Huron will be inducted into the South Dakota Golf Association Hall of Fame on Saturday.     Entwistle was the golf assocation’s golfer of the year in 1981 and 87, while winning match play titles in 1980, 81, and 86, State Amateur in 1982 and 87, and a state two-man title with Alan Bales in 1988. 
   He says he's honored to have been chosen for the Hall.  97634   :23  “great names”.
   One of his most memorable wins was his first, the 1980 match play.  97635   :35   “I was”. 
   Entwistle is also a member of the Huron High School Hall of Fame, as he helped the Tigers win their one and only state title in 1974 as an eighth grader.  He is a past president of the SDGA, and is currently on the Junior Golf Foundation Board.
