RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) - The military says more than half of South Dakota National Guard employees will be affected by furloughs beginning next month.
The Guard says 540 full-time employees out of 958 in the South Dakota National Guard are affected by the budget cuts, known as sequestration.
The furlough will require certain National Guard employees to take 11 unpaid days off from Aug. 2 to Sept. 30.
Guard spokesman Terry Ommen says the Guard is able to call employees back to work in case of an emergency.
