BHS SOFTBALL…The Brookings softball team opened its season Monday by sweeping Sioux Falls Lincoln.
   Brookings scored five times in the third inning and went on to a 9-6 win in the opener.  Brianna Kreutner had two hits, four RBI and two runs scored.  Abby Weisbeck drove in two runs and Kara McDougall scored twice.  Amanda Sonnenberg scored twice.
Kaitlynn Bassett earned the win, allowing three walks and striking out five.
   Brookings scored five runs in the first, and five more in the fourth to take a 10-4 win in game two.  Kreutner had two doulbes and two RBI…Katie Beck had three hits…Kelly McClain and Weisbeck each had two hits and two RBI…Alex DeGroot had a triple and two RBI and two runs scored…and Mariah Gummer scored twice.  McClain picked up the win, striking out six and walking two.
   The Bobcat J-V team came up with an 11-5 and 4-3 sweep.

SDSU SOCCER…South Dakota State officially opens the soccer schedule Friday night, hosting Iowa State in a 6:00pm match at Fishback Soccer Park.
   Head coach Lang Wedemeyer says the Cyclones and SDSU have developed a healthy rivalry over the years.  He says Iowa State’s an athletic team.  97623   :15   “box for headers”.
   Wedemeyer says the Cyclone personnel could create some physical mismatches for the Jacks.  97624   :10   “those bigger bodies”.
   Wedemeyer says he may be able to address potential mismatches by how the starting lineup is created. 
 
SDSU BASEBALL HONORS… South Dakota State University right-hander Chad Hodges was named Horizon Air Summer Series Pitcher of the Year during the recently completed collegiate summer league season.
   Pitching for the Humboldt (Calif.) Crabs, Hodges compiled a 7-0 record with a 2.46 earned run average in helping the team win its third consecutive Far West League Championship. He struck out 55 batters and walked only 18 in 62 innings pitched.
   Hodges pitched primarily out of the bullpen for South Dakota State during the 2013 campaign, posting a 3-2 record with a 4.76 ERA in 16 appearances, including two starts, as the Jackrabbits went on to win the Summit League tournament championship and made their inaugural appearance in the NCAA Tournament at the Division I level.
   College teammate Eric Danforth, an outfielder for the Walnut Creek Crawdads, was an honorable mention selection to the all-Horizon Air Summer Series Team. The outfielder from Watertown batted .302 with two home runs and 20 runs batted in, adding 12 stolen bases in 35 games.

DOUPLE-NCAA LAWSUIT…Summit League commissioner Tom Douple says he’s closely watching developments in a lawsuit filed by former student-athletes against the NCAA.
   Past UCLA standout Ed O’Bannon, and others, have sued the NCAA, claiming the organization is using their likenesses in EA Sports video games, without compensation.  A judge in California’s considering whether to give the suit class action status.
   Douple says the matter’s discussed at conference meetings.  97621   :21   “our member institutions”.
   Douple expects financial, and other, implications if the NCAA loses the case.  97622   :39   “future, as well”.
