MADISON, S.D. (AP) - An alleged co-conspirator of a South Dakota Republican activist on trial for illegal robo-calls testified against Daniel Willard, saying the two of them sent the calls targeting Republican legislative leaders they believed failed to support veterans.
Gary Dykstra also said Wednesday during Willard's trial in Madison that he thinks the charges against Willard are politically motivated and that he would have preferred not to testify. Prosecutors gave him immunity from prosecution for doing so.
Willard has pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor counts of violating South Dakota election law. Authorities say the robo-calls he allegedly helped engineer did not have required disclaimers identifying the sender.
The prosecution has rested its case and the defense is now calling witnesses.
