Canistota man found dead after semi drives off I-29

10/8/13

A Canistota man is found dead after his semi-truck left Interstate 29,
traveled through a cornfield and came to rest on a gravel road in
Union County.

Gerald Fry, age 66, was traveling southbound when his semi left the
roadway. The vehicle crossed the median and northbound lanes and
entered a cornfield to the east of the interstate.

The truck traveled about one mile before hitting the steep ditch
embankment on the gravel road. The semi crossed the road and
the trailer was high centered, bringing it to rest.

It appears Fry may have suffered from a medical emergency prior
to the crash. He was deceased when first responders arrived at the
scene. An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of
death.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating.
