Pierre PD reviewing Taser policy

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - The Pierre Police Department will examine its policy for the use of Tasers in the wake of an incident in which an officer used a stun gun on an 8-year-old girl.

Chief Bob Grandpre says that officials with the Rapid City Police Department and the state Highway Patrol have been asked to help with the review. He doesn't have a specific time estimate but says once the group is assembled the review of the three-year-old policy shouldn't take long.

The state attorney general's office is investigating whether the unnamed officer acted appropriately when he used his Taser on the girl Oct. 4. A Pierre Police Department review earlier concluded that the officer acted appropriately because the girl was suicidal and turned a knife toward the officer.
