State tries recruiting medical device companies

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - South Dakota economic development officials are attending an event in Minneapolis to recruit companies that make medical devices.

Representatives of five South Dakota communities are joining the state Governor's Office of Economic Development at the Medical Design and Manufacturing Exposition on Tuesday and Wednesday.

State Economic Development Commissioner J. Pat Costello says South Dakota can offer medical device companies a productive workforce and a good business and tax climate.

Representatives from Aberdeen, Mitchell, Yankton, Sioux Falls and Vermillion will attend the event to meet with out-of-state companies that might expand or relocate their operations to South Dakota.

South Dakota already has 25 businesses that are engaged in making medical devices and equipment. Those companies employ more than 26 percent of the state's workforce in bioscience.
