A Brookings man is accused of assaulting a police officer during an
incident early Sunday morning.

Residents of an apartment building on the 800 block of Sixth Ave.
reported an unknown man had entered the building and began
banging on their door.  He forced the door open and entered the
apartment.  There was a struggle, police were called and two
residents restrained the man until police arrived.

The suspect took a swing at the first officer at the scene, hitting him
on the arm. The two struggled until a second officer arrived and the
man was taken into custody. The officer had scrapes and bruises
but did not require medical attention.

There was some damage done to the door of the apartment and
to some personal property.

The 21-year-old Brookings resident has been charged with simple
assault of a law enforcement officer, criminal trespass and disorderly
conduct.
