Madison well collapse costs thousands

MADISON, S.D. (AP) - The cost of dealing with an underground water well collapse in Madison is estimated at just under $22,000.

The city's 6,500 residents were forced to stop using water for a couple of days in mid-January when a concrete-and-dirt roof collapsed into an underground well that feeds the city's water towers, contaminating the water. The incident happened in the midst of a $3.5 million water plant improvement project.

Schools canceled classes for a day, and bottled water was trucked into town as crews cleaned up the mess and restored water service.

Worker wages including overtime added up to $13,000. Engineering costs totaled $5,000, bottled water $3,700, and water sampling and lab analysis $200.
