Hail that fell in White on Monday

Crazy weather day

by Perry Miller

When you go from a high of 64-degrees and a tornado warning to a blizzard
warning that closes the interstate in a matter of hours, it must be South Dakota
in the Spring.

That was the situation in Brookings County as the tornado warning was issued
at around 3:30 Monday afternoon.  The National Weather Service indicated there
was a severe thunderstorm, located near Volga that was capable of producing a
tornado that was headed towards Bruce.  The storm weakened and the tornado
warning was canceled about 20-minutes later.

Then the winds switched to the Northwest, the temperature dropped and the
ice rain turned to ice and snow.  The state DOT closed Interstate 29 from
Brookings north at about 11:00 last night because the blowing and drifting was
making travel "impossible." It reopened shortly after 7:00 this morning.

The Brookings County Sheriff's Department issued an advisory shortly before
nine last night advising no travel in the county.
