Castlewood woman embezzles more than $1 million

4/2/14

A Castlewood woman is given 15-years in prison for embezzling
more than $1 million dollars from her employer.

Forty-eight-year-old Brenda Anderson was the office coordinator for
Sioux Rural Water Systems in Watertown from 2005 to late 2013.
She pleaded guilty to aggravated grand theft and admitted stealing
more than $1.15 million dollars during her employment.

Judge Robert Timm says it's the most egregious case he has
seen in 27-years serving on the bench.

States Attorney Dawn Elshere says Anderson wrote checks to
accounts payable and then altered them to pay her personal credit
cards and then altered bank statements to make it appear the
payments were made to the proper account.

The 15-years in the maximum sentence.  Judge Timm says he
wanted to send a message to others.  Anderson also was
ordered to pay a $30,000 fine, court costs and make restitution.

Anderson had made no attempts in making restitution prior to
sentencing.
