Golf:   Summit League Championships

SDSU GOLF…Denver holds the lead in both the men's and women's Summit League competitions. The Pioneer men recorded a team total of 292 while the women fired a 295 in round one at the Sky Creek Ranch Golf Club.
   On the men's side, Fort Wayne's Jacob Groninger leads the field after shooting a 3-under par 69. The senior recorded six birdies in his first round of play.  In the women's competition, Denver holds the top-four positions after day one. Mariell Bruun shot an even-par 72, which leads the way.
   The SDSU women fired a 333, good for third place.  Megan Mingo led the Jacks with a 77, good for a tie for sixth place.  Sydney MacDonald is at 79, Islamiah Fuad at 82, Brianna Janu 83, and Myranda Dunmire at 86.
   The Jackrabbit men are fifth at 306.  Hudson Carpenter is tied for 12th at 75, with Lukas Davison at 75, with Grant Smith, Dylan Baker and Trevor Tobin at 78.

LCC GOLF…Hamlin swept the team titles in the Lake Central Conference boys and girls golf tournaments Monday at the Lake Region Golf Course at Lake Poinsett.

HODGES POW…South Dakota State’s Chad Hodges has been named Summit League Pitcher of the Week.
   Hodges received his third honor of the season after recording his first career shutout. Against Fort Wayne, the Summit League's leading hitting team, Hodges tossed a seven-inning complete game victory, yielding just three hits, all singles. He issued a pair of walks while striking out six for his fifth win of the season.

SUMMIT TENNIS…The Summit League has released the brackets for the conference championships next weekend in Denver.
   The Jackrabbit women will enter the tournament as the No. 2 seed and receive a first-round bye, while the men are seeded third and will face No. 2 Fort Wayne.
   The SDSU women will face the winner of No. 3 IPFW and No. 6 Western Willinois Saturday at 10 a.m., while the men will square off against the Dons at 2 p.m.
   Denver received the top seeds on both sides.

COOPER OBIT…A man who started his football coaching career at the high school level in Iowa before going to the University of South Dakota has died.
   Larkin Funeral Homes in Sioux City, Iowa, says Bernard "Beanie" Cooper died Sunday at age 86.
   South Dakota Public Broadcasting reports Cooper had a 43-11 record at Heelan High School in Sioux City before going to USD in 1975.
   He coached the 1978 Coyotes to the school's first North Central Conference championship in 27 years.
  Cooper stepped down after that season to serve full time as athletic director before serving in that capacity at Indiana State University.
   Cooper entered USD's Athletic Hall of Fame in 2008.
